T'was the night before Hockey, when all through the land

Not a roster was stirring, not even those undermanned.

The line-ups were sent to the Commish with care,

In hopes that a pickup password soon would be there.

The players were nestled all snug in their roles

While a fire for the playoffs burned in their souls.

Finding spots for veterans and rookies under a new salary cap,

Had jostled our memories from a long winter’s nap.

When out in the thread there arose such a clatter,

There might be no season, what Hell is the matter?

Away to football we shuffled like a slug,

And cracked open a beer, chug-a-lug-lug-glug.

The reality set in that the money had won

Over the love of the game, it's decided, it's done.

And there would be no more rebuilds and Cup challengers

For our simulated league, and 30 tiny managers.

The fault was a little old Grinch, so slimy and slick,

Bettman they called him, and boy, what a dick.

But even this puppet and the greedy corporate suits,

Couldn't stop the season, a new CBA! We have a truce!

"Now Datsyuk! now, Daley! now, Prosser and Vistinen!

On, Komi! On, Kulikov! on Dumba and Lehtonen!

To the top of the standings! to the top of the Board!

Stretch pass away! Score away! Win a league award!"

And then, in a instant, The GMs got all prepared

The humming and hawing while everyone compared.

As we drew in our heads, options turning around,

Down came the injuries and new bodies must be found.

Some were dressed all in bandages, some's best days were kaput

Some were long shots, Some never were and some stood about five foot.

"Why didn't both rookies make the team?

If they had I'd be sailing. Man, what a dream!"

"Did I remember my minors cap or to submit my budget?

What about that trade offer? Really hard to judge it.

Playoffs? I don't know, this race is really thick

I need some more players but I traded that pick!"

We spoke not a word, but went straight to our work,

And filled out our rosters, without being kneejerk.

And laying aside all of our worries and fear,

To hope that all would fall into place this year.

Scapegoats will be made and Heroes are born

To the roar of the crowd, and of the goal horn

But I say to you all, as you try to sleep tonight,

"Happy Hockey season to all, and to all a good fight!"
