[Rumours/Reports] Official Roberto Luongo Trade Thread (Keep it all here please)

Well with the salary cap in place, giving out long term contracts is the only way you can sign a top player to a manageable cap hit. Look at the Crosby deal that just went down today. 104 mil over 12 years which works out to a 8.7 cap hit or something like that. Kovy same thing. It's a crapty situation because most GM's know that chances are that the player won't be as good near the end of the contract but it's the only thing they can do if they want to stay competitive.

Vancouver would never have been able to put together the team that we had if Lu's cap hit was 7 mil. Same with Pittsburgh if Crosby and Malkin's cap hit was 10 mil and that's what it would pretty much cost if you wanted a shorter term.

and why you think Luongo could agree to such a contract? The whole idea of existing front-loaded contract was to give Luongo money he deserves AND to lower cap hit. Any different contract meant either less money to Lu or higher cap hit for the team.

....or you could look at it this way:

Your best forwards play around 20 minutes per game. That's equal to around 1600 minutes per season.

Your goaltender plays 60 minutes per game. (sometimes 65) In a true platoon situation, each goaltender would be giving his team 2400 minutes.

So which makes more sense: A somewhat effective less than 1600 minutes from a third line forward, or 2400 very effective minutes from a top level goaltender?

On top of that, in the second scenario, you haven't dumped a valuable asset for basically nothing...

The signing and contract of Quick and now Price must help out on Luongo's value. They're getting paid over a million more than Luongo. Luongo is a great deal for 5 million. I'm pretty sure a deal will get done with Florida. Jovanovski says Luongo is a top 5 goalie with years left at elite level. Tell me they don't want him.
