Brendan Gaunce | C/LW

Gaunce has not improved substantially every year.

Since his draft year, he has virtually not improved on his ppg ratio.

He is twenty years old playing against 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 year olds.

Its weird he can be on a team that is an offensive legend and only be 3 points over a ppg when he was a ppg 2 seasons ago.

the average age for CHL players is 18.8 years old and Gaunce turned 20 less than a month ago, he lines up against the other team's top players and that doesn't usually include a lot of 16 or 17 year olds unless they're really good

He had 72 points in 65 games (1.1 PPG) this season and 60 points in 60 games (1.0 PPG) last season. So yes he has improved, even if only slightly.

The reason it seems like he hasn't progressed is because he switched teams and situations changed. He went from being on a team where he got all the opportunities and ice time he could handle, to a team where he had offensive stars ahead of him. So he is relied upon to be their shutdown guy while continuing to put up points.

He's still top 10 in playoff scoring despite being in more of a defensive role. He's doing just fine. It's guys like Brown, Fox, and McDavid that are going quiet right now.

Big guys usually put up good numbers in the playoffs in the OHL. I guess there is less room and brute size makes the difference. He had a great playoff last year too, but then was back to a point per game average in the regular season this year, give or take.

At this point it looks bleak for him, he is big but not aggressive enough, slow, and doesn`t score enough. Chris Kelly, average 3rd line center, in his last season in OHL had 76 points in 50 games.

There's lots to like about Brendan Gaunce.

He's big, appears to have good hockey IQ, appears to be coachable, has decent offensive stats, seems to play a sound positional/defensive game...if he had better foot speed and consistently played with a mean streak, he would probably have a long NHL career.

And he does have average foot speed. The reason everyone thinks he's slow is because he'd rather be in position than skate in circles.

I think when he makes the NHL everyone will see how his skating really is, rather than myths and rumours without watching him on a nightly basis.

Ryan Getzlaf put up 54 points in 51 games in his last year in Junior at the same age as Gaunce.

I guess things looked bleak for Getzlaf too

Yeah, and what did he do the year prior? 75pts in 49 games, Gaunce, not even in the same ballpark at the same age.

Ryan Oreilly was ppg in his draft year.... same as Gaunce.

His game translates flawlessly to the NHL. It's not just about blowing out the CHL.

He never played a game in junior after he was drafted, So he never had a chance to "blow out" the CHL

What's happening with our forwards I think, is that they are all being trained to be defensively responsible in all situations, in my mind I think that takes out some of their creativity. Maybe there is a happy medium to let young forwards develop their offensive side as well.

I watched it in pre season, and his acceleration was slow but hes fine once he gets going.

He reminds me of Sam Reinhart when I watched him in the WJC, Reinhart didn't skate hard or fast but he was in the right spots blocking passing lanes and just having everything covered.

He doesn't chase the game, he watches it evolve and reacts.
