GradinToSmyl Posted June 26, 2012 Share Posted June 26, 2012 There are a lot of overpaid UFAs, some players are greedy and just want to go for the money; while others try to go to teams whom have the best chance of winning and are willing to take discounts. The NYR are notoriously known for overpaying (Gomez, Drury, Richards, Gaborik etc). If we can convince Getzlaf to re-sign, Perry would take a discount to play with his good buddy. Secondly, if we can prove to the UFAs that we are truly building a winner, those players who truly want to win (i.e. Weber) would be also willing to take a cut to play. Obviously some players aren't willing to take a discount and we don't know who all of them are; I'm just saying its plausible, yet very unlikely. Even if we can't acquire the Perry and Weber portion, our team will still be significantly improved with Getzlaf and/or Ryan in our top 6. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

His hits on Doughty and Kane are legendary. He is not going to be a Norris caliber defenseman though. He may throw big hits, but never with any sort of consistency. He may QB the PP, but with no consistency. I mean if he was consistent in just one facet of his game, I wouldn't be saying these things. He isn't though. Although neither is Bieksa. Did any of the Kings that stormed the net during the playoffs seem in any way worried that Edler was on the ice ready to clear them from the crease?...................................No. Edler doesn't make the opposing team pay nearly enough to warrant a number 1 defensive spot. I am a Canucks fan and support the team tirelessly. However when the defensive zone breakdowns become systemic, changes need to happen to ensure we don't go out earlier than the Coyotes next year. Bottom line: Our defense is nowhere near Stanley Cup finals ready. Yes we couldn't score enough either, but when you can't get the puck out of your own end, that happens. When you dump and chase everytime, that happens (although that falls on someone else's shoulders). Hell maybe it's Bowness that has to go. L'Orange Posted June 26, 2012 Share Posted June 26, 2012 I think you're on the right track with the bolded. The personnel the Canucks have on the blueline is top notch. There is no way any of us should be looking at our defense and saying this isn't good enough for a Cup winning team. I will agree that one more top 4 guy is needed, maybe a guy like Jason Garrison to add a steadying presence, but our defense is not a mess. I doubt anyone looked at the Kings blueline, a group whose 3rd pairing consists of two rookies and a defensive specialist in Mitchell whom most Canucks fans have blasted for costing the Canucks the series against Chicago, a Cup winning group. The way I see it, Edler is on the brink of rounding out into a #1 all around defenseman and Hamhuis-Bieksa make up a well above average 2nd pairing (Hamhuis was 10th in Norris votes this year), while Ballard, although overpaid for a guy playing on the 3rd pairing, is a way above average 3rd pairing defenseman, which basically ensures that every pairing the Canucks have is safe to put out. The blueline is pretty damn complete and, like I said, just needs a guy like Garrison to round it all out. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Everyone demonstrated through their play that they were sure of their roles and what was required from them. That wasn't evident with the Canucks defense. They were caught out of position far too much during the playoffs Again, this points to Bowness. For Edler to round into a number one, he will have to be consistent and a lot less forgiving of the opposing team getting anywhere near Schneider/Luongo/Lack/whoever ends up starting.
