[Article] Shane Doan is the Perfect Solution for the Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks are preparing for what should be a most interesting start to unrestricted free agency. With so many teams needing to fill holes and so few players available, prices are going to be high. The Canucks are definitely one team that is going to be incredibly active when the market opens on July first. Already linked to Justin Schultz and Jason Garrison, the Canucks will be searching for help on defense and up front. Like it or not, this team’s top-six is ridiculously weak at this point. With players like Mason Raymond, Chris Higgins and Jannik Hansen constantly rotating in and out of the top-six, something needs to be done here. High on Mike Gillis’ priority list is to find a player who can complement David Booth and Ryan Kesler to form a legitimate, dominant second line.

Recently, Phoenix Coyotes’ GM Don Maloney indicated that UFA-to-be Shane Doan will be testing the market due to the tumultuous ownership situation in the desert: “If you’re Shane Doan, would you sign?” he said at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. That’s a great point from one of the most disciplined executives in the game; Doan wants security and, right now, there is an incredible lack of security in Phoenix. Consider Doan’s age (35), would it not surprise you if he was really interested in having a legitimate shot at winning the Stanley Cup? Enter, the Vancouver Canucks.

If Mike Gillis is as smart and attuned as many fans feel him to be, he is probably already planning out a way to try and lure Doan to Vancouver. Despite his unwavering desire to make the Canucks younger, Gillis has to understand that the Canucks could certainly use a veteran presence like Shane Doan on the roster. Having a guy who has been through all the battles as one of the great leaders in the game can only help in the locker-room. Think of a more offensively gifted and grittier Manny Malhotra from a leadership perspective.

If signed, Shane Doan would immediately solidify the Canucks’ second line. Considering the turmoil that the second line experienced this past season, that would not be the worst thing in the world. Standing at six-foot-one and 223 pounds, Doan would be in a situation in which he could easily put up 20 goals and 40 assists. People may be quick to denounce Doan saying that he is not the pure playmaker that a guy like PA Parenteau is, but his passing ability should not be discounted. Doan is incredibly underrated when it comes to the playmaking side of the game. Considering his smarts, vision and on-ice abilities, Doan is arguably the best fit available for the second line on the open market. Showing no signs of slowing down, Doan and his career stats speak for themselves.

In Phoenix, Doan is the guy; in Vancouver, Doan would be a great complementary player who would greatly improve the Canucks’ chances to win the Stanley Cup. If Mike Gillis can somehow lure him out of the desert the Canucks would be ridiculously lucky. At the end of the day, Doan is an offensive force that is ridiculously tough to play against. Does that not sound like something the Vancouver Canucks were missing last season?

If we can't land him....I'd take Semin. We are all about winning now, and this guy could be our Mogilny. Who cares if his defensive game isn't up to snuff. That's why we have defence in the first place, something we also need to improve upon this off-season.

Bottom line: Semin is a game changer, and his talents should not be over-looked come July 1st.

I agree, that guy brings grit, experience and skill, put him on the line with Kesler and Booth and kick Raymond to the curb where he belongs, all of a sudden that 2nd line has a lot of skill, and the beef to back it up.

If he signs here, Im calling the Province front page title...trademarked by yours truly

"GET ER DOAN!"
