I don't understand why that means something is up. Here is the tweet from news 1130.

News1130 Sports ‏@News1130Sports
#Canucks goalie Cory Schneider can file for arb on July 5th. Agent Mike Liut has stopped takin calls - which indicates something is up.

Does anyone know why that would indicate something is up?

It's the fact that his agent isn't taking calls that means something is up, not when he can file for arbitration.

Once Luongo gets traded all these dominoes will fall. It just takes a little patience.

Interesting.

The key difference is that Sopel can fill in for Seabrook and Campbell just fine. Bieksa, he is garbage so in that sense he is like the worst defenseman in the league.

When Cody (Hodgson) gets older, he might be better than Datsyuk.

Let's not push this guy (Kassian). He's still immature, and if he fails on the 2nd line it's because he isn't ready. Some guys really need years to develop, it's how well and how fast players adapt to the game. In my opinion, I'd rather have Horvat getting 2nd line minutes. He will start off on the 3rd line next season but I see him making the transition, being a great compliment to whoever plays his wings.

At this point, I don't see Kassian fitting in to any role other than a 3rd. If players like Kassian start getting 2nd line minutes then we just stay inconsistent as a team.

It could mean that Schneider is not getting traded for sure because Luongo is on the verge of being traded...and then the agent isn't happy with what MG is offering and feels his client can fetch more.. or he's just unhappy with what MG is doing and wants his client to get a deal he deserves and then become UFA to leave next year but without screwing us too much by not taking other offers...?

i may be wrong but thats really bother me. i can smell from here (and i'm in france, so yes it smells big time) that we re going to fail on both side. no trading Luu (which is no that bad imo) and lets Schneids go without even getting something in return for his rights.

i do hope i'm worried for nothing.

I really hope that up until this point MG has been shopping Schneider along with Luongo.

Always should have a plan b.

If you like looking at statistics to determine who's better, you're just a casual fan.

2.41 season GAA isn't very impressive. Let's not get into playoffs and his SV%.

Cory Schneider is the next Patrick Roy.

Never crossed anyone's mind that Liut stopped taking calls form the media, not MG? Pretty sure he's still talking to the Canucks. A deal will get done one way or another, even if they want to stay with Lu as CS is a more valuable trading chip with a contract than without........also doesn't say he's going to file for arbitration, just says he can.

The canucks can't lose schneider for nothing he is an RFA. If a team signed him and the canucks didn't match it then they would get draft picks for him. If he goes to arbitration then no team can sign except the canucks, if the canucks choose not to sign him then he becomes an UFA.

If that was the case, then Luit would be on the phones more, not less.

^This. It likely means they have a deal in principle in place and are just waiting on a Luongo deal to go through. That could be close or they could be confident enough that it will happen to not worry about other teams.

Having said that, they wouldn't be able to start talking about offer sheets until July 1st anyways so how many people would he be talking to.

perhaps Liut is taking a cue from Luongo's agent - who isn't taking calls to avoid creating even more stories...and has seen all the misinformation floating around.
not taking calls from radio stations? indicates nothing.

For all we know, a deal to sign Schneider long term could already be in place. It would probably hinge on Luongo being traded first though.

If that were the case, hopefully it would mean Schneider won't sign any offer sheets.

I'll be surprised if Schneider signs more than a 3 year deal. By the end of three years he should have a CUP to his credit and be able to negociate the home run contract. As it sits now his body of work, while stellar' is still pretty thin. Not in either party's interest to go long term at this point.

I posted this in the Luongo thread a few days ago. It clearly explains why the Schneider camp is dragging their feet:

Typical conversations between key players in the Luongo trade:

****

Burke to Gillis: "Dude, when can we get this deal done?? The media and Dave Nonis, who I secretly think has a lifelong man crush on Luongo, are driving me crazy!"

Gillis: "Sorry buddy, gotta sign Schneider first."

****

Schneider's agent to Schneider: "We should wait as long as we can before signing with the Canucks. If we wait til they trade Luongo, we can probably squeeze another half mil out of them. And then there are potential offer sheets. Some teams are willing to go as far as 4.5 mil for ya!"

****

Gillis to Schneider's agent: "We are prepared to offer 5 years, $17.5 million."

Schneider's agent's phone's automatic response to Gillis' calls from his cellphone: "Thank you for your call. I'm on vacation."

****

James Duthie to Gillis: "Any news with the Luongo trade?"

Gillis: "We are fielding more calls..."
