how can the Pens/Wings do it and not us?

Sorry, you talk about how Philly is better for it after their shakeups?

You do realize the big piece of their shakeup is the sole reason they lost in the playoffs, and the players they sent off won the cup for another team right?

So the rumours are that the Penguins and the Red Wings are in on both Suter and Parise sweepstakes. How the hell is it that both these teams who already have big name/big contract players can go after these 2 guys and still be able to stay at or below the cap and the Canucks can't?

The Pens were quick to trade one of their best players (staal) when he didn't accept their offer and got a pretty good return and yet our GM is dragging the Luongo fiasco on and on and can't seem to work anything out. What does Gillis do instead? He signs a one hit wonder (Garrison) to a lucrative deal which will come back to bite him in the ass. (just like Ballard, though he didn't sign him, he still traded for him)

Gillis needs to get creative and make the "bold" moves he said he would when he got hired. I know everyone here treats MG like the messiah and anyone who criticizes him is a troll, but CDC needs to take it's blinders off and wake the F up. Gillis is at best an average GM who has made a ton of mistakes.

The Wings got Zetterberg, Franzen and Datsyuk making big money, the Pens got Crosby, Malkin, Letang and Fleury and yet they still go after the 2 big Fish and our GM just sits there and gives big money to average players year after year and doesn't have the stones to make bold moves.

Both the Wings and the Pens have won cups recently, yet they are still unsatisfied and continue to bolster their lineups but management and some fans here continue to say "don't worry, we are fine, we don't need any big changes, we are only a year removed from a finals appearance and have won 2 consecutive President's trophies" Really? Is that good enough? Just a finals appearance and fricken Pres. trophies? Look at the Flyers, they were also coming off a Finals appearance recently but shook up their core and traded their captain and perharps their 2nd best player and they are now better for it.

We shouldn't be satisfied with anything until we win the cup and we should remain hungry and so should management. Maybe Parise and Suter wouldn't come here anyways, but it'd be nice if Gillis can atleast make n effort and get creative

In the Cap system everyone is a Cup contender. And yes, Vancouver is an amazing city, second to none IMO.

The problem is players can't enjoy it most of the year. The city is hockey mad, has a ton of band wagon jumpers who are brutal at times, and never ending onslaught of media attention. The city itself has 0 appeal other than a vacation spot. In 5 years how many big name free agents have come here?

Gillis operates on a hometown discount

Philosophy. It has it's perks but also it's disadvantages. We have guys locked up at reasonable hits, but they all have nmcs. he would kinda be slapping guys like hank dank Kes burr hammer juice Lu...etc in the face by aggressively pursuing parise when the guy may get a Rick Nash like contract.

Then we have some bloated contracts takin up cap space like manny at 2.5 and Ballard at 4.2. Take these both away and we'd be in Semin territory.

I can understand manny, but Ballard should been cut long ago. Im not sure why MG and AV never got together to at least try and showcase Ballard at 25 mins a game with lotsa PP time to get his stats up a bit and maybe put up 25-30 points. We won the prezzie trophy the last two years youda thunk we coulda tried even if it cost us a few points in the regular season.

I appreciate the "earn your minutes" mentality, as well as the building team and PP chemistry in the regular season attitude. Having said that, Ballard is now unmovable unless we waive him and our top 5 PP has vanished when it's mattered most the last two post seasons. It doesn't seem to be working.

I'm not blaming kb4 cause he never got a fair shake, but considering all the minimum wage defenders who were above him in the pecking order we coulda put his enormous cap money to better use the last 2 seasons.

Don't kid yourself?

Philly made great trades, which will leave them competitive for years. Don't forget they had Briere who is better than Richards, made space for Giroux who became an MVP candidate, cleared cap space and got world class prospects (lots of them) back.

Where the Flyers mucked up was they blew $50 odd million of the cap space on a goalie who became a sive, not the saviour they cleared space for. And they were a touch unlucky with Pronger getting hurt.

Absolutely smashing positive trades!

Both the Wings and Penguins have a lot of cap space due to losing players. The Staal trade is also not comparable in any way. Of course it's easier to move a young stud centre with one year left than a 33 year old goalie with 10 years left.

Give your head a shake if you think he's an average GM. They all make mistakes. He's resigned all of our core players to cap friendly signings, and augmented the team with some very useful players. He's done far more for this team than Burke or Nonis did.

Flyers last year with Richards and Carter: second round flameout. Flyers without Richards and Carter: second round flameout. Yeah, much better for it.

Where the frick do you live? :picard:

It rains from mid or late Oct to mid February. My softball team runs March to Sept and averaged 3 rain outs a year.

Check out average rain falls during summer. Toronto gets more rain, Eastern seaboard cities like New York, particularly Washington, Carolina and Florida all get substantially more rain (think Hurricane season). As much as 5 and 10 times more. And I suppose you pick weather and the natural beauty of Columbus, Winnipeg, Minneapolis or (puke) Edmonton?

If i was a nhl player i would not want to endure the 10 months of non stop rain Vancouver has

Hamhuis

Sedin

Sedin

Sundin (cough)

mid level Burrows, Demitra, Bieksa...

These guys were all UFA!

Detroit, just lost Lidstrom, Stuart, Hudler, and Rafalski in the last two years. If they DON'T replace those holes with, at least, a Ryan Suter, they'll be in a dogfight to make the playoffs. RIght now, their top four defensemen are Kronwall, Ericsson, White, and Quincey. They're really not all that good anymore, especially with Datysuk (34) and Zetterberg (32) succumbing to age and injuries.

Pittsburgh, on the other hand, has the #1 and #2 best players in the world. Crosby is so good, Pittsburgh has basically thrown pluggers with him and they're still a great line. It's like having to pay two Burrows rather than another 6 million dollar Sedin. It's the same thing with Malkin. Also, keep in mind that they just shipped Michalek and Staal out of town. They've got holes to plug and money to spend.

Buying high priced talent is a gamble on many fronts, think Gomez/Drury.

Chemistry is important and keeping pieces together is difficult if you decide a few high priced guys are needed.

What Gillis is doing is extremely difficult and will only work if guys buy into the program. Must say I didn`t think he could pull it off.

Garrison & Hamhuis could have made far more dough in other markets same with Bieksa and especially Burrows.

Wonder if Doan would consider us...how sweet would that be

Lots of people seem to be overlooking a major point, and its that we have no roster space.

In the long run, this is what our roster is...

D.Sedin H.Sedin Burrows

Booth Kesler Raymond

Higgins {Space} Hansen

Malhotra Lapierre Kassian

Hamhuis Bieksa

Edler Garrison

Ballard Tanev

Schneider

{Space}

We maybe have 1 forward position avilable, and theres a good chance it will be taken by Schroeder or someone brought in from a luongo trade.

Because MG has learned his lesson with the Loungo contract and doesn't want to be saddled again with a behemoth till death do us part deal. The rumor is both have been offered 12 year deals. No thanks!
