2011-12 Exit Analysis: Derek Joslin

No player in recent memory has had the kind of season that Derek Joslin had this year for the Carolina Hurricanes. Acquired in mid February of 2011 from the San Jose Sharks for future considerations, Joslin had a decent if not solid run with the Hurricanes to close out the 2010-11 season and looked primed to compete for the #6 spot on the blue line this year. The emergence of Justin Faulk, however, put those plans on hold, and it was November 6, in a game against the Dallas Stars before Joslin was able to crack the game day line up. Once in the line up, Joslin was able to see fairly consistent ice time, playing 14 of 20 games, including the game against the Stars.

As December turned to January Joslin once again saw himself out of the lineup for an extended period of time. It was during this time period that Joslin played 4 games with the Charlotte Checkers, where he would register three assists and an even +/- rating. Joslin would return to the line up on January 14th, taking the place of an injured Jaroslav Spacek. He would play in seven consecutive games ad Spacek was out with an upper body injury. This would be the last time that Joslin would see consistent time as a defender for the rest of the season.

Staring in mid-February Joslin was inserted in to the line up as a fourth line winger. It was at this position that Joslin would play for the remainder of the season, being scratched only two games the rest of the season.

We'll take a look Joslin's stats after the jump.

The Good

It's hard to argue with the fortitude Joslin showed this year. He worked hard every opportunity he was given. It was his work ethic that Coach Muller pointed to when he decided to insert Joslin in to the game on the fourth line. Once inserted in to the lineup as a forward Joslin acquitted himself adequately. He quickly made the transition for defense to forward, a position he had not played since before his days in juniors.

The Bad

Joslin did finish tied for the third worst +/- rating on the team with a -15 rating, although just under half came late in the season when he played as a forward. He was able to only score 4 points, two goals and two assists. While Joslin is not expected to contribute on the offensive side of the puck, he doesn't contribute enough to the team to score only 4 points in 44 games. With that said, it's hard to determine what impact playing forward had on his point total for the season.

The Money

Derek Joslin's NHL salary last year was $650,000 a cap hit of $700,000. He earned slightly less than this due to his brief stint in the AHL.

- fans average rating of his performance was a C.

Ive talked to some Carolina fans in other forums, and they were all quite fond of Joslin, saying that he seemed like the hardest working player on alot of occasions, and they thought he had potential to be a solid bottom pairing D. However too many young Ds there pushing for ice time, a one way deal, and they obviously didnt want him playing forward any more = buy out.

If this guy can come and challenge AA for the 7 spot, its a great low risk signing imo.

I liked Joslin when he was with the Sharks... hes still young at 25 and seems like has the willingness to put in the hardwork to play...if this is true I like this signing indeed.

A solid dman, probably no better than an Andrew Alberts type player.

That's a pretty snap judgement.

Viturally the entire Hurricanes roster were minus players - there was one regular who was an exception, Tlusty was +1 - their best player, Staal was -20.

Playing on the fourth line can result in being a minus player while indicating very little about that player's effect on possession or scoring chances - take Malhotra and Lapierre for example.

The fact Carolina bought him out may have more to do with spending 60 million on Jordan Staal, expecting to have a good chance of and clearing salary expecting to sign a big name UFA defenseman, needing a right handed guy, wanting a depth defenseman on a two-way contract - whatever - decent young players are often released - that doesn't necessarily indicate they will never be good players in the NHL.

The Canucks obviously see something in him, as they did in players like Burrows and Tanev who no one else took an interest in.

Anyhow, the guy is a 25 year old with a lot of grit, heart, a big shot, decent size, obvious aggressiveness - the fact he was used as a checking forward should indicate something about his versatility - he was picked up to fill the 8 or 9 spot on the depth chart. You never know what a young guy with those credentials could develop into.

Welcome to Vancouver Derek.

Good post, basically what I was going to say. I don't understand why people are complaining about this when he is not going to start the season as a top 6 defensemen. He is only 25 years old and still has time to develop into a solid bottom pairing guy, a la Aaron Rome. In the past there have been multiple injuries requiring even the 8th and 9th defensemen to step in, so I have no problem with this.
