So, with the Oilers getting all the goodies are they now contenders, or far from?

Ironic you think to make this on a day when Minnesota has possibly their biggest day ever in franchise history signing two all-stars. I'd think you'd be asking about them and their improved chances rather than Edmonton.

As for the Oilers though, they could make the playoffs but they still have some growing to do.

Yeah, it'll be interesting how they will do with all the youngsters on that team. They will probably battle for the 8th and final spot to get into the Playoffs or just not make the Playoffs. Can't see them being last and going for the 1st overall pick for the 4th year in a row.

what goodies? a college defenceman, ryan smyth, and another top pick for being (almost) the worst team in the NHL?... sorry but offence doesnt win championships anymore, the 80's are over and the oilers will still miss the playoffs. barring any unforseen amazing trades for defence and goaltending... but they would have to be pretty amazing

This year they will do a bit better. Not playoffs, but maybe 10th-12th in conference, get another high pick. The kids will all then know how much hard work it takes to be successful in the NHL and they will make a strong push for the playoffs.

It will be at least 2-3 more years for them to be considered cup contenders again unless their GM makes a couple of really good trades and signings this off-season and the next.

It depends what they decide to do. They could make themselves a playoff team this year by using their assets and making some moves to improve now. I'd be very tempted to flip one of their first overall picks for a top pairing blueliner - and move another small skilled forward like Gagner or Hemsky to get a little more balance in their lineup. If they choose to retain a whole barn full of young skilled forwards they won't be going anywhere yet. They have a few good blueline prospects as well, but they are a very unbalanced roster as it is. It will be interesting to see what they decide to do in terms of moves, but if they don't make any, they will do well to overtake Calgary and Colorado to climb out of the Northwest basement.
