Guys Raymond would literally get ZIP on the trade market. Might as well give him another year to rebound :)

settled early for what would have been the low end of the award from an arbitrator...and for only one year...something is up.

If we pick up Doan, where would Raymond fit?

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows
Booth - Kesler - Doan
Higgins - Matthias - Hansen
Raymond - Lapierre - Kassian

Look at the contracts being handed out. This signing makes sense.

I have no problem believing that the Canucks simply want to give Raymond another chance, and frankly I like it. However, it just occurred to me that if the Canucks are in fact in pursuit of Doan or another top 6 forward, there isn't really a roster spot for Raymond.

D. Sedin - H. Sedin - Burrows
Booth - Kesler - Doan <(Hypothetical)
Higgins - _______ - Hansen
Malhotra - Lapierre - Kassian
Ebbett
Volpatti

The only open spot is for a 3rd line centre and Raymond doesn't fill that need. It will likely be filled by a spare forward, like Ebbett, a prospect from within the system, like Schroeder, or perhaps filled by a piece coming back the Canucks' way in a Luongo trade, like Marcel Goc from Florida. Either way, I don't see where Raymond fits in so this could very well be a sign and trade.

I have been one of Raymond's biggest critics on this board - I truly believe (even before his injury) he lacks the ability to go into the gritty areas and definitely doesn't make us younger, bigger, or stronger - HOWEVER - to me it's a "prove you want to be a part of this team and contribute to our goal of winning a cup" kinda contract. If he tanks like last year all his fans on here won't be able to hid behind the injury excuse and the critics like myself can draw straws and see who gets to drive him to the airport at season's end.

As much as I have questioned his offensive abilities (with the exception of him letting Kopitar dipsy doodle around him in the playoffs) Raymond does back check and is usually not a defensive liability and a very good penalty killer. Time to show Canuck fans that believe in you and support you Mason that you deserve the minutes you get each night and you can be that same offensive spark you once were.

Would be ecstatic if he and a 3rd could bring back an Antoine Vermette type (wishful thinking for Derick Brassard?)

If he stays with the team he`d better stay away from the Top 6...

Raymond - Lapierre - Hansen is... fine but I would rather have him traded.

So he can be traded because he signed before the arbitration hearing??

If so this is a great move.. Better off getting a draft pick or decent 4th liner for him than nothing. Who knows maybe his back was really hindering him last year and he will come back stronger and score 50 Pts.

I hate him as much as everyone else but letting him walk would have been stupid because there are teams out there that will want him.

I hope Raymond has it in him to put up his best season yet.

We need him to start driving to the net and NOT avoid getting his nose dirty.

Please make a bounce back year mayray, get bigger over the summer, 2.275 is a bit much for him, 1.75 would have been ideal but stupid rfa status.

Well let's hope for a return to the 25 goal season. I'm just hoping he stays on his frigging feet. The boy can skate but seems to be more effected by gravity than most.

What a waste of money.

People keep saying 'rebound year after injury'...he wasn't having a particularly great year before his injury!! And he had 1 goal in the playoffs!!! This guy has had one good season, and yes flukes happen.

He's a weak, small perimeter player. Waste of cap space.

Pretty good move under the circumstances I have to say. In a perfect world he wouldn't be here or he'd be getting 1.5M but at this point the contract is not so bad.

Gotta say I like this, the guy deserves another year with us after fighting so hard to come back. Hope he regains some of that flash we saw early on...

Not a fan of his (was in his early years) but his inability to put on weight / strength has bothered me. Likely the issue with the nucks as well (ie getting knocked over). You can develop those things if you try (sure body type makes a difference) but there have been lots of smaller guys in the league, they just are super strong firehydrants (St. Louis, Fleury, Kariya etc). Even Steve Y wasn't big but he was tough on his skates, why he hasn't developed this (excl last years comeback) I don't know.

Regardless. He deserves a shot, has a low cap hit for a guy who has potential to hit 25 goals (as he has in the past) so easily tradeable as a sweetener on a Lou deal to get a better player(s) back and a good depth signing/insurance policy as he can play 2/3.

Ok signing and good asset management by MG. We'll see if he stays or is packaged.

Give Raymond a break. Year recovering from injury you have to expect him to suck. Kesler sucked most of the year (recovering from an injury or getting a new one). a year without injury: let's see what he can do.

He could have been traded after the arbitration hearing - only thing Canucks couldn't have done was walk away from a decision.

I want to see him prove us all wrong this season. If he doesn't, well we expected it anyways.

He already had his shot. Maybe we'll trade him for a 5th rounder?

Just looked up the year Mason Raymond was drafted in. And wow!

Can't believe instead of Raymond we could have selected: Letang, Quick, Yandle.

He sucked before the injury too - was invisible during the Finals run playing next to a beast-mode Kesler.

I think you may have that backwards....I thought the nucks could do two things: accept the decision or let Raymond go to full UFA....and if they accepted the decision they were stuck with him for a full year, no trade. This way, its not bound by those rules anyways, but I am curious which way the arbitration rules go?

Your points are correct however you're excluding a couple of facts in your analysis/view on MayRay (which I agree not a fan).

1. The guy did come back from a broken back man. Its not easy even coming back from torn knee ligaments which I can attest to personally. Firstly, strength takes time to fully recover - which we all know isn't his strong suit to begin with, so even harder for him, he needed an offseason. Second, the mental aspect is the hardest. Any athlete will tell you this. When I tore my knee, 8 months after I was rehabbing and it was fine, but I was still wearing a brace. I noticed one day in the gym after squats that my right calf was much smaller than my left still, even after 2 months of rehabbing. I watched myself squat more closely in the mirror and noticed something, I was favouring my bad knee, shifting weight to the left. Subconsiously I was scared. This is very common after a tough injury (remember Bure after he tore his knee, people saying he wasn't going to the net the same?). Sorry for the long explanation but it is in support and being objective in regards to what this guy went through, he broke his friggin back and was back in the NHL playing professional hockey against beasts, when he isn't a strong guy to begin with. I have to figure there was trepidation subconsciously to go to the hard spots (somewhere he didn't like to go to begin with).

2. MG was pretty vocal about him in the offseason, and as demonstrated by forcing a paycut. They have served notice, get stronger (last year is a mulligan Nucks appreciate the challenge of coming back from a dreadful injury, but as you allude to and its true, he has to get stronger and go to those areas to be effective.

3. If he cannot, well then yes its time to move him because now, he's had time to rehab, deal with the mental side, address his deficiencies in the offseason (strength) and has had numerous years to develop it.

4. Always thought we should have kept Grabner vs him because of this issue specifically, they both bring speed, but Grabner is tougher on his skates and stronger and seemed to be one of the only guys (ex sammy) that had chemistry with Kesler..but I digress.
