The Summer of Gillis

My main complaint is the lack of a serious enforcer.

How many more concussions and cheap shots do i have to see go unanswered before i finally give up on this team that won't even fight for each other ? Management needs to put a couple monsters in the lineup or risk losing half their fan base.

one has to wonder if there are issues in the room when players sit back and watch the Twins get gooned 24/7.

Out of all the OP's points (none of which I agree with at all) the one that confuses me the most (and I have read it in other posts concerning Hodgson) is how does holding onto a player who is not happy here with his ice time going to guarantee us a better deal than we got at the deadline? If Luo coming out and saying he is done here and wants to leave hurts Gillis's bargaining position how does Cody basically saying the same thing improve MG's bargaining position on Cody.

He dealt Cody at the deadline because teams were willing to overpay. I highly doubt Hodgson would garner us much more than Kassian right now if we tried to trade him - Gillis struck while the iron was hot. And make no mistake - those same guys who say Schultz will be a star on the blue line have also said Kassian is going to be a power forward - something we lack in our line up. You can't judge the Hodgson-Kassian trade already for christ sakes - it happenned with only a couple months left in the season. Feel free to come back and review it after next season and we will see.

Really another MG did the Nucks wrong thread....come on! The CODHOD trade was the best thing to happen to us. That kind of cancer you don't treat you excise and then pray it never comes back. Shane Doan does not need to come north, he is a dedicated Yote just testing and buying time to see is the leadership and city does the right thing to keep the club in place. As to Schulz come on let it rest. Garrison is a great signing for us, I hate losing Sammy but he deserved the money and a chance to close out a great career, Tampa wins that one. By the way it's only July 10th. Our GM is doing what is best for our club. He has a large piece of the summer left. Give the management team time and room to work.

MG had his hand forced with Hodgson - no chance but to trade him so we're lucky we got anything out of that ugly mess. Instead he finds a big, physical future top-6 forward which is exactly how you win Cups nowadays.

Letting Salo go was not his fault - he should be commended for not offering such a rediculous contract like Yzerman did.

Signing Garrison to a long term, expensive deal was a gamble though. He's had 1 good season, but that being said we got the best possible deal for this guy and he fits our top-4 better than Salo did to be honest. More physical, better shot than Salo and younger, this is a big upgrade on defence over Sami Salo who was showing signs of age and fatigue down the stretch last season. Great move.

Trading Luongo could end up being the biggest mistake in franchise history and MG knows it, which is why he's asking for as much as he can get.

Honestly right now the Canucks are fine to go into the season as is - maybe a depth centerman would be nice but not essential. However, we are far from playoff ready, which is when MG will really have to make some deals, get another top-4 defenceman to play with Ballard (because we are very thin on the blueline now, 2 injuries and this team is finished) and maybe a depth forward.

Sedin - Sedin - Booth

Burrows - Lapierre - Higgins

Hansen - Malhotra - Raymond

Kassian - Schroeder - Weise

Bitz

Edler - Garrison

Hamhuis - Bieksa

Ballard - Tanev

That's a lineup that will have good success in the regular season, win us the NW again but probably not the conference. Then this is what I want to see for the playoffs, Game 1:

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows

Booth - Kesler - Higgins

Raymond - Lapierre - Hansen

Kassian - Malhotra - Bitz

Edler - Garrison

Hamhuis - Bieksa

Ballard - top-4 defenceman

Alberts - Tanev

depth defenceman

I'm sorry for whining here, but...

We all know CDC has a certain amount of retardation within the people posting here. Yes - I come here. I don't have to, if it irritates me so much, but I do. The fact of the matter is that information and news finds it's way here quite fast, because of the amount of hockey freaks (meant as a good thing) hang around here and enjoy 'breaking' the news to everyone as fast as possible. But for the love of God - as the slow hockey summer (& trade deadline) arrives, all the haters and whiners crawl out from underneath their beds and log on here to cry about failures of the management and players.

Oh boy OP, you are on the wrong track about stuff...

I doubt you could ever pull of a deal involving Luongo. It's not that easy to do stuff without messing up...

Raymond is a good hockey player, and a valuable asset to our group. As long as he gets his game back on track and finds his groove. He did break his back.

Salo is one of my favorite players all time here, but he was expendable and not worth 3.75 for two more years. Money well spent on a younger Garrison. Bit of a gamble, yes. But isn't everyone?

And speaking of gamble - Schultz? Would have been nice to land him, but that would have been the gamble of a lifetime. And promising a guy with 0 NHL games under his belt a guaranteed top-4 spot would have been a very stupid move for a team not in a rebuilding phase. We are contenders. It's like giving the starting job to Eddie Lack. Could be, should be just that good. But will he be?

So you used to think Gillis was a "Genius", but now you call him a "Full Retard". Their ai'nt no in-between with you, is there?

The 12 year for Luongo was ridiculous, when he would'nt give a 2 year deal for Salo, arguablly our 2nd best d-man, and lost him for nothing. I hope Gillis comes clean on why he gave Luongo that deal, because if he came into my office and demanded that, I would have told him straight to his face, you can pack your bags, and traded him to the Flyers or someone else.

A while ago I had a thread with the same title saying that this summer we would have a great opportunity to load up our team with talent for now and for the future. I made a checklist of To Dos for Gillis. If he accomplished them we would surely become a feared contender once again

The point of this is to see how he has done so far and analyze what continues to go wrong with this organization

To Do

1.sign Cory- check. The fact that this happened before the deadline is huge and speaks volumes about the two way trust existing between ginger and the Canucks. Also a testament to Schneids character that he didn't put our nuts in a vice and wait for a six mill offer sheet

2. Trade Luongo- obviously the jury is out, but I have a sinking feeling we are going to get ripped off like we did in the Hodgson trade

3. Sign Schultz

Epic fail here, he was ours to lose, and we lost him. Gillis messed this up bad, worse than letting Erhoff go (who we noticeable missed last yr)

He told Schultz he was not going to guarantee him anything- a noble strategy but very very very stupid, obviously this kid wants to jump right in and be given a chance to show what he can do. Hd doesn't want to go to the AHL for an ice age like all our other prospects

Gillis failed here, big time, a bc kid who loved the canucks, what a mess

4. Resign the core

Resign Raymond and let Salo go?

Wow, just wow, would rather have given Salo 2 yrs then resign Raymond WTF gillis, let's be honest here, who is more useful?

Fail

6. UFAs

Garrison - gillis went boom or bust here, nuts in a vice after yzerman overpaid like he did with ohlund

Doan would be nice- ANYONE else feel like he is ours to lose and Gillis will find a way to do it?

Not a saviour but would help our team immensely

Why are the Canucks such a travesty? They struggle to make logical moves from Burke to Nonis to Gillis- not much progress

Wouldn't it be nice up be able to offer Coho in a deal right now???To bad we played that chip already and instead of getting a sure thing back, Gillis takes a big risk

Use to think Gillis was a genius, this summer Gillis looks to have gone, how shall we put it Kirk Lazirus?

This team needs size and grit -fast.

Booth did not play well with the Sedins and Raymond is not the answer except on the third line or in trade for grit and size.

Garrison is a fill in 3/4 d man as he just played out his contract year alongside a d man that could have won the Norris.

The team does not have an Ehrhoff set up man and besides Bieksa and Ballard, nobody has the Sami balls to stand up for their team mates.

Two pieces of major importance and pedigree needed -one D and one winger.

And then we get to see if Cory can handle the workload as he has no history at this level of having done so.

2) In what way did we get ripped off in that trade? Hodgson didn't even want to play here, so we traded him for another developing prospect.

3) Schultz didn't sign here because he wanted to play with the younger team. He definitely would've started on opening night. Also, who cares about Ehrhoff. Defensive liability and Edler easily replaced his ability to QB the Powerplay.

4) We obviously tried to sign Salo, but do we really want to pay a player 4M who will honestly play around 40-50 games? No. Re-signing Raymond was a good move IMO. He's still recovering from a huge surgery. A 1 year contract is perfect for him, so we can move him at years end if he doesn't gel.

Buddy, give your head a shake.

Get the facts straight. It is said on NW that Gillis would not go over 3 million.

Not sure why he could not keep Sami with a 'signing bonus' compensation that BXA and others have commanded, especially since Sami was a cornerstone d man and played for the 'discount' for some time.

Gillis throws 20 million at Sundin, who never played nor wanted to play a game as a Canuck, and yet can't reward Salo who gave his all for the franchise for a decade.

Who put together the core of this team!??!!? Sedins, Luongo, Kesler, Burrows, Bieksa, Edler??????? oh thats right....not Gillis....Dip Sh*t

Gillis is just a recipient of a team that had a solid core put together. Mike 'the baggy eyed' Gillis has done nothing to help this organization.
