His dad, Mike Sr., died of a rare heart abnormality when Zack was eight. A mother of four, Shirley Kassian ran a cleaning business to support her family.

Just saw this right now. :( And people expect so much of him in the NHL already he is only 21.

That's too bad. As my Father also passed away before I even turned 1, I know how this situation works first hand.

Definitely pulling for him 100% now.

Hope he becomes a great player so he can make his mom more proud of him through all difficulties she has gone through

He will do his dad proud. Shooting arrows after he scores?

Great guy, and great family. A good friend of mine grew up living across the street from the Kassian family, i think they still live there

I'm rooting for him! Seems like a really nice guy too, so it's hard not to cheer for him.

I like the guy too. He definitely could be just what we need this year. Hopefully he can help transform our 4th line into a real impact line while slotting up through the roster too when we need some line changes.

No offense - but would you pull for someone less because they had two parents? What about me, didn't make it out of my teens with either -- should people really pull for me any more or less?

I think I understand the sentiment, but I think people should have been pulling for Kassian (and everyone else) anyway...unless they'd discovered a reason not to. I want the players I cheer for to succeed regardless.

I'm not asking for a pity party for myself, I'm just saying that I understand how it feels. This makes me want him to succeed even more than before.

I got ya. I guess I just want them to succeed, period - regardless of upbringing, etc. But empathizing sure as heck ain't a bad thing, so kudos. Here's hoping he has a season everyone is proud of no matter what.

That is really sad... Kassian is mean on the ice but i noticed in his interviews he is very humble off the ice.

MUCH MUCH MUCH better personality than the selfish Cody Hodgson swaped in the deal.

Kassian somewhat seams depressed! I don't want him to become an enforcer rather than I happy hard checking player like Lucic.
please visit mindcheck.ca for more details about hard feelings.

I don't want to sound harsh but everyone has problems in their life and I just hate how the media tries to take advantage of our emotions. Lost my dad too, but crap happens, and the last thing people want to be reminded of is their pain.

Yeah, found that out way back when he did that After Hours segment (Someone posted it earlier in this thread)

I am very impressed by Kassian. He seems like a guy who is very high energy, high impact, energy kind of guy when he's on the ice, but he's very well spoken and humble seeming off the ice (at least in front of cameras). Very good mix I think. I'm really hoping he turns into a cornerstone of the team in the coming years, not just another piece of prospect trade bait.

No, it's called death, and it makes loved one's lives incredibly more difficult and creates vast amounts of adversity for them to get past the death of their loved one. Kassian has overcome the adversity and should have 100% of the support of Canucks fans to be the successful NHL'er that we know he can become.

Feel so bad for him. Zack's a real nice guy in person for a guy of his body frame but on the ice, he doesn't look like it cause he's out to do his job and send fear into the opponents. He really is a respectful guy, isn't cocky cause he's made the NHL, and is open minded to taking in tippers and suggestions from others.

Wish him even more success now that I heard about this...will make his mother that much prouder if he becomes a solid NHL'er and just imagining the hardships he and his family have gone through just hurts me. I hope he can develop into his full potential; his mom sure should be proud - she's done everything a mother could really do :)

Like I care what you think. It does nothing to strengthen the resolve of a person to throw them a pity party. I'm sure Kassian knows this as he is a winner and you are a loser.

You can be as melodramatic and sanctimonious as you want, you are only representing a weak mentality.

Neither. I just don't care about having a popular opinion.
