etsen3
I know its not a accepted source....HOWEVER.......if it is true, what does this mean for Doans Future? Hockeyy Insiderr@HockeyyInsiderr I believe my source very much and I am personally guaranteeing the #Coyotes will be in Phoenix next year. #CONFIRMED #MSM late again
Fanuck
Regardless of how nice you want to be and the playing environment you want to create you are limited by things called rules. You can only have 23 players on your team and they must be under a salary cap so you can't just keep everyone forever, everyone on the team is pretty much a great guy. At some point in time common sense battles loyalty. Hopefully we can get away from carrying $2 and $3 million dollar a year players that we can't put in the press box and have to create roles for on the fourth line or wherever we can fit them in. Boudrias
Good scenario. However I'm not sure we look like a SC team any more. We seem to have gone backwards, whether by injury or a refusal to understand the direction the league is taking. I may be wrong, as I said, we have had some crucial injury problems but I just don't feel comfortable with our signings / acquisitions since Boston in the finals. Not enough quality, size and push back. I actually thought we would have addressed these issues after Boston.........but it's like they don't exist for the management.....fair enough, I suppose they know best. Dogbyte
I understand what you are saying and to a point I agree, there is a fine line between loyalty and doing what is right for the team. But, I keep looking at DET in my mind and somehow they do it year in and year out (keep their loyalty to their players who in turn give their heart/soul to the franchise) and stay at the top. They are the preeminent franchise in this league and have been for the past decade - that is what I feel MG is trying to build in VAN and I support any move necessary (or non-moves) to make this happen here. What those moves are is up to MG, unlike others on this board, I admit that MG knows more about hockey than I do.
The Lock
A) we need a back up goaltender. That will eat some space. we will undoubtedly take some cap back in the luongo deal. Even if it is a small amount. I just don't see it being ONLY picks and prospects. C) Kesler's salary out untill Dec and then what? Same situation as we'd be in now. D) Schroeder most likely be called up, so that's another chunk of salary And E) where the hell is Raymond going to play if Doan is on the team? He won't bump Doan, Hansen, Higgins.... And he shouldn't be on the fourth line. If Doan is here for 3 years, get a return on Raymond now. Be the best thing possible.

MikeBossy
Hopefully this saga ends quicker than the Luongo one lol - I have to chuckle and wonder what Doan is thinking - the Coyotes have been a joke since they were moved there and every frickin year its all we hear about over and over - its obvious the taxpayers and people of the fine state of Arizona don't give a rat's you know what about the Coytotes - Bettman needs to swallow his pride and move the team (like he did in Atlanta) to a more suitable market such as Seattle or Quebec City. Shane needs to realize the feasibility of hockey in Arizona is just not there - the Coyotes are a dead franchise - the local government and the NHL need to quit administering CPR and let it die. I know he loves the area - join another team for a shot at a cup and nice final payday contract and retire in Phoenix at the end of it all. I am sick and tired of a two bit organization dominating NHL news over and over again. No other league would offer this much support to a franchise in such peril. /end rant :D
Line Juggler
Doan's agent just said he will probably sign before July 16th. That date is no longer relevant.
Fanuck
The thing is - no one knows if Doan will sign here - and there is nothing stopping the Canucks from being able to offer him as much as anyone else offers - that is the point at this point. There is no point making moves before knowing where he signs - if he does sign in Vancouver, there is plenty of time to accommodate his cap hit, and it won't be a great inconvenience or force the Canucks to dump salary. If he signs elsewhere, it's irrelevant.
HockeyHobo73
I had a dream that the Coyotes were staying in Phoenix... It was so convincing.... I'm glad i woke up to reality again....
arsenalian
Teams cannot exceed the cap by 10%, this is a fact. If one is to believe on-line sources like capgeek (which has been incredibly accurate in the past) this leaves only about 3mil(approximately) to sign Doan without unloading other salaries - we all know this figure is unlikely to land Doan. If one is to believe Gilman (which I've yet to see him explain his figues himself) there is plenty of room.
-Vintage Canuck-
Come on MG, sign Shane Doan! Hopefully the offer is good enough to convince him to sign here.
DeNiro
The thing is, you don't have to have your 23 man roster set until the beginning of the season either. So even though cap geek counts players like Volpatti, Ebbett, Tanev and Kassian, there's no guarantee those players will be on our roster on opening night. Take away those four players and we have over 6 million in cap space. Obviously we would have to fill out the rest of the roster after, but that would come after the Luongo trade. And if teams think they can steal Luongo for nothing, Gillis always has the option to trade Raymond to give us enough capspace to fit both Doan and Luongo. TheWheeler
I never said to move anyone BEFORE Doan signs. All I said was that if the Canucks can't offer him the right contract because they insist on keeping Raymond (if there are cap implications) then it will be a complete joke. That is all I was saying. DeNiro
We could realistically start the season with this roster if we signed Doan, and no teams are offering anything reasonable for Lu. Sedin Sedin Doan Booth Schroeder Higgins Burrows Lapierre Hansen Volpatti Malhotra Kassian Ebbett Hamhuis Bieksa Edler Garrison Balard Tanev Alberts Schneider Luongo Not saying this will happen, but if teams try and call Gillis's bluff and force a trade for nothing, he always has this option. Even with Kesler returning there would be enough room. I'm sure after a month of Reimer or Theodore as their number 1's, Florida or Toronto would cave. canucks3322
the series that he had with the kings makes me think he wouldn't wanna sign with them, or the sharks they're a old group that always fail each year, the canucks seem like a good choice for Doan

Tortorella's Rant
MG doesn't need to offload Luongo before signing anyone. The team can go over the 70.2 million cap by 10% (just over 7 million), MG just has to be cap compliant by the first day of the regular season, or the Canucks are fined and forfeit a 1st round pick iirc. Either way, if Gillis & Co want Doan, they will not let the cap and Luongo get in the way of it.
DeNiro
But he should part with Luongo first before signing a big name player like Doan.
The Architect
So how does the cap situation work? If we only have about 3.5 mil in cap room right now...can we exceed it with a Doan deal as long as we figure out cap sitch by start of season? Because we arent getting Doan for 3.5 lol
