I doubt we would get Doan. We need to get rid out Luongo before signing Doan, which will take a while

MG doesn't need to offload Luongo before signing anyone. The team can go over the 70.2 million cap by 10% (just over 7 million), MG just has to be cap compliant by the first day of the regular season, or the Canucks are fined and forfeit a 1st round pick iirc.

Either way, if Gillis & Co want Doan, they will not let the cap and Luongo get in the way of it.

What shadowgoon said is correct, and not only that but Kesler has a five million contract, that will be LTIR money for a couple months, that COULD if it is a couple months plus about 12 days parlay into a 2m dollar break off a potential doan contract, with the 2m made up with relief money from the LTIR..so without subtracting any salary from the current depth chart, we can offer him 5m, not bad really. Then over summer, maybe change up some stuff as in ship out raymond, lu or one or two bottom line guys...you get what i am saying...

For once I just have this weird feeling that we might actually sign the guy we all want over here.

I really think a guy like Doan could push us over the top. Our top 6 would be crazy.

True, but if we're already over the cap, what does that do to MG's bargaining and negotiating capabilities with Lu? Every other team will know we have to get rid of him, and it'll turn into a SJ/Ehrhoff situation.

You are alluding to a concept so far above the comprehension of most CDC members that it seems like crazy talk to them. In their minds it works like this, Doan good, MG get Doan or you dumb and we replace you, now add pictures to thread or useless.

His statement

We need to get rid out Luongo before signing Doan, which will take a while

is just plain wrong - NO, we don't need to get rid of Luongo BEFORE.

Ability to go to capgeek.com doesn't make anyone a "cap geek". On the other hand, Canucks has (well) paid The Cap Geek - Gilman, so don't you worry about cap.
Love your enemies - it will drive them crazy ...

Ok so...where is our offer to Doan? MG apparently spoke to Doan's agent last night no?

I would be extremely surprised to see Doan as a Canuck. I'd put the odds at about 50-1 and that is being generous.

Yes, because if it hsn't been leaked on the Twitters or Googles by random bloggers then Gillis CLEARLY hasn't made an offer yet.

Maybe, and I am just taking a shot in the dark here, the Canucks, as a negotiating tactic, decided not to inform you of their contract offer to Doan. Perhaps there has been a contract offer or the talks have gone so well that they want to finalize all the smaller details before hammering out an offer to Doan. Or perhaps Doan is looking to Cash in for his final long term contract and the Canucks don't want to sign him to a multi-year deal for the kind of money he can command due to his career and the timing of his UFA status.

At any rate time will tell wether or not he will sign with the Canucks.

I would be extremely surprised to see Doan as a Canuck. I'd put the odds at about 50-1 and that is being generous.

I think its better than that!

So if we can take what we hear in the media to be accurate and there are 30 teams. It has been said that he won't sign in the East this is how I see it breaking down:

Pho - 3 - 1
SJS - 5 - 1
LA - 6 -1
Van - 10 - 1
Stl - 10 - 1
Det - 15 - 1
Chi - 20 - 1
Dal - 20 - 1
Win - 20 - 1
Ana - 20 - 1
Cgy - 25 -1
Edm - 25 - 1
Col - 25 - 1
Min - 30 - 1
Nsh - 40 - 1
CBJ - 1,000,000 - 1 yes I am saying there is a chance!

Though SJ and LA are in close proximity to Phoenix, I have a hard time believing that Doan wants to make 4 trips back to Phoenix wearing another Pacific team's uniform.

Would a 2 year 12-14 Million Dollar contract be better than 4 year 20 Million Dollar Contract. He might retire in year 3 or 4.

The Canucks have just under 3 million in two-way contracts in addition to over 3 million in cap space - Tanev sticks with the Canucks, but there is still 2 million worth that can be sent to the Wolves.
Signing Doan may slightly alter their negotiating strength where Luongo is concerned - but that would not be as significant a difference as Shane Doan. Signing Garrison and than Doan = massive. A slightly reduced return for Luongo (if at all) - not as significant. There is also the possibility that another forward is traded if Doan is signed...
The Canucks have lots of options and nothing standing in the way of making a serious bid for Doan.

He could well play at 39, so the 4 year deal is better. I doubt there would be as much demand for him if he was a FA two years older, so his next deal is very important. It should basically be a retirement deal, which is tricky under the 35+ rules.

I was quite sure we would not aquire Doan, but would have been great if we did. Mabey CDC scared him away with stupid threads like: If we sign Doan, who will be captain?

Canucks need to play the Doan negotiation slowly. Obvioulsy Doan would like to see what Phoenix can do first. No sense in trying to put pressure on Doan by making him an offer at this point. Just let him know we are interested (which has already been done) and that's it. Once he is ready to start entertaining offers, then make your pitch. Anything offers before that will simply annoy him as he has been pretty clear that he wants to give Phoenix a chance first.

The two offers he's received are from divisional rivals. There's more to the offers than just hoping to land him.

yes we have 3 mill under the cap, plus the 10% and kesler on injury relief.Thats ten plus mill a season, meaning whatever we do with Luo if we get more room we will be easily under siging Doan.Doan if not going back with the coyoties might want to stay close, but it does make more sence to play at home before retirment. He is a Linden type player, only other team I can see him going to would be the JETS if they made there team better fast this year or next.I like other am not getting my hopes up,but I think theres a good chance we will see him here this year.

Exactly. In fact LA and SJ putting in bids already, may actually hurt their chances of landing him. Doan is slow and methodical, and Gillis knows how to deal with guys like that. This is reminding me a lot of the Sundin sweepstakes, except Doan is a way more effective player currently, than Sundin was at the time. Hopefully Doan doesn't keep extending the deadline though, as there's not going to be any definitive solution in Phoenix before the start of the season.

If Doan is serious about wanting clarity in the PHX situation then I cannot see how that will happen. Elections aren't until November and it is highly unlikely the citizens will vote themselves a 2.5% sales tax. Gillman has been talking to Doan so Van has to be in there. Signing Doan would be hugh in Gillis's ultimate goal of acquiring Weber!

Vans being patient. Once Doan is ready they will talk to there agent find out what the other offers are and give him the best offer we can. I say 5.5 mil x 2 years. This is with out any trades. Over 3mil in cap space, 2 mil in cap relief on Keslers deal and yet to get to 23 players there will be at least 2 mil being sent to the wolves. So not rush to trade anyone as long as we do not go over 7mil. Luongo trade will give us cap space for the trade dead line. And not strap us to tightly so we can add Weber next year for 7.5 mil. Malholtra will not be back, so his money goes to Burrows, and either Edel or Ballard would have to go. Sice Edler will want a huge raise, since that may affect us getting Weber so keep Ballard, Or just get rid of both if we get Weber. Yet Edler decision will have to be made before July 1.
