I was just noticing that the draft year of 2003 was a pretty good year, as most players first round went on to at least do something in the NHL
So I'm just wondering, if the draft would to be re-done with knowing what the players would turn into, which order do you think they would have gone in? Do you think Ryan Kesler still would go 23rd or earlier or later.
I'm just bored and thought it would be interesting to see.

http://canucks.nhl.c...und=1&year=2003

later drafties that I thought might be higher

Loui Erikson
Patrice Bergeron
Matt Carle
Shea Weber
Maxim Lapierre ( I know he wouldnt be in the top but I love Lappy)
David Backes
Jimmy Howard
Dustin Byfuglien
Brian Elliott

My top 10

Eric Staal
Shea Weber
Zach Parise
Jimmy Howard
Ryan Getzlaf
Ryan Suter
Correy Perry
Patrice Bergeron
Brent Seabrook
Thomas Vanek

I agree very deep draft year, and the lockout helped with players being able to develop more. but how is mike Richards not in your top 10??

No kidding! Patrick Stefan taken 1st overall, dude was a bust.

Yeah like Taylor Pyatt is one of the more successful of the first rounder. What does that say.

The year the Sedins got drafted was the best by far.... We got them, and everyone else got shafted...

Well it`s your list but I would say take off Howard because he hasnt proven as much in the nhl as Richards and then after him Bergeron or Vanek.

I think I have them written down here somewhere, let me have a look...

C'mon man, that's what the internet is for, it'd take all of 5 seconds to go to Google and find the wiki page for all the draft years.

Sorry about that. I was on my cousins jailbroken iPhone which has a screwed up browser.

Howard has been Detroit #1 goalie for the last 3 years with pretty decent number. Bergeron is basically at the same point per game but I think he's a better two way player.

2003 was a great year. I think the worst one was 2007

Go check out the 99 NHL draft, it can't get worse than that. Hank & Dank were the only 'good' selections...3.5/4 of the drafted players were not good at all.

..I think 99 was also considered the worst draft year in general for sports, may be wrong but my point is the NHL one sucked :P

I didn't think about it that much so there might be some mistakes or something, I just kinda put them down and this is what I came up with:

1. Shea Weber
2. Eric Staal
3. Zach Parise
4. Marc-Andre Fluery
5. Corey Perry
6. Jimmy Howard
7. Brent Seabrook
8. Ryan Getzlaf
9. Ryan Suter
10. Tomas Vanek
11. Ryan Kesler
12. Dion Phaneuf
13. Patrice Bergeron
14. Mike Richards
15. Dustin Brown
16. Dustin Byfuglien
17. Brent Burns
18. Jeff Carter
19. Loui Eriksson
20. Nathan Horton
21. David Backes
22. Milan Michalek
23. Joe Pavelski
24. Matt Moulson
25. Braydon Coburn
26. Tobias Enstrom
27. Nikolai Zherdev
28. Matt Carle
29. Brian Elliot
30. Clarke McArthur

Wow. Kesler 11?? It's mind boggling how overrated this guy is!! I'd take like 17 of those guys you have rated after 11th before Kesler. We seem to draft fairly poorly, but drafting must be so difficult, drafting's like a box of chocolate. You never know what your gonna geey eet.

The 2000 Draft was atrocious after the 6th overall.

I think he underrated Kesler. I would have taken Kesler over Vanek and Jimmy Howard easy. No question a Selke forward who was the best player for Team USA at the olympics would go by 9th overall at least.

Yeah I agree, he makes everyone around him worse I think. I also agree we seem to draft poorly but I think that may have to do with that we rarely get a high drafting spot so our prospects take a bit longer.

i love looking at old drafts just to see what teams could have done differently, though there is no way of knowing at the time.

Howard has been terrible. He's been decent in regular season but he's a playoff choker. Won't get them very far. Now with Lidstrom gone, he's probably going to be even worse. Shouldn't even be mentioned in the top 10. Could end up like Manny Legace if he doesn't step it up.

Brian Elliot is another one, who can't play under pressure. Overrated for sure.

I'd have Halak over both of them, pretty damn easily.

I wouldn't just because he had a bad year doesn't mean he is bad.

Most of those players after him have never scored 40 while bringing that same defensive ability, and he showed all that by winning the Selke.

I think they just look at the past season, and judge his entire career by it.

The 2003 draft was a terrific year. So many of the players in that draft went on to become NHL superstars, not just average NHL players.
I think the 2008 draft will be a little comparable to the 2003 draft in about 3-5 years when the rest of the 08'ers fully establish their game.

2008 Notables :

Steven Stamkos
Drew Doughty
Zach Bogosian
Alex Pietragenlo
Luke Schenn
Colin Wilson
Cody Hodgson
Tyler Myers
Erik Karlsson
Jake Gardiner
Michael Del Zotto
Jordan Eberle
John Carlson
Jacob Markstrom (Florida's future #1 goalie)
Justin Schultz
Derek Stepan
Adam Henrique
Anders Lindback

Definitely not as star-studded as the 2003 draft, but one of the better draft years in recent times for sure.

If you think Jimmy Howard has been terrible than you need to get your eyes checked. He's playing better than Osgood when they won the Cup in 2008(to be fair though, Hasek was the one that carried them to the Finals and Osgood picked up the pieces).

Halak isn't really better than those guys of course he look pretty good a few years ago when ''le Canadien de Montréal'' lost in conference finals but he have been pulled in every series he played that year, agaisnt the Capitals in first round he was sitting on the bench for a games and his work was ''easy'' because the players in front of him was scoring a lot of goals, in fact no other players have scored more goals than Mike Cammalleri that year in the playoffs including the Blackhawks and Flyers' players.

Edited by canucks_qc, 12 July 2012 - 10:49 AM.

We have more than we think in common with ''Le Canadien de Montréal''

Both have logo shapped in ''C''

Canadien and Canucks mean the samething

We both hate the Boston Bruins now

Alain Vigneault coached both teams

Rogers Arena, Centre Bell, it's phones company

We are blue white and green they are blue white and red

Our #1 goalie is from Qc, their #1 goalie is from BC

But we have one important thing different and I hope it will change after the next season, we don't have Stanley Cup banner

Well he had a 70 point season before that.

He just scored more in 10-11, his point totals were the same.
