Incredible Movies

Before you post in this thread, I want to let you know that this isn't a "list favourite movie" thread. This is much more than that.

This thread is about what incredible movies exist, what makes them so wonderful, and to share critical thought on specific movies.

Please do not post if you are just going to list your top 10 movies of all time.

Please do not post if you are going to state a movie title.

I want to hear your critical opinion about certain movies and give feedback on what everyone expresses.

The other day I watched a movie that I should have seen in theatres. But didn't.. I watched it on Netflix instead.

The movie is Super 8. Made by JJ Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg.

If you have already seen this movie, then good. But if you still have not, then I urge you, you must go watch this movie. It's totally worth signing up for Netflix right now and watching it.

Why is the movie good? Spoiler free of course..

The movie's two star lead roles, child actors, just captivated me. They were raw, emotional, true to their feelings, and backed with tremendous dialogue. Even if the story line tanked and the screen play was horrid (not that it did), the child actors would still make this a movie worth watching.

Did I mention this film was done by JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg? One, a heavy weight in modern movie productions, and the other, an award winning classic director to be remembered for all of time? Whether if you like JJ Abram's movies or not, the combination of both creative minds is something worth experiencing.

In essence, this is a sci-fi adventure movie which is best described as "Goonies" meets "Cloverfield". Boys going out on an adventure and eventually entering a horror movie with the monster/alien. JJ Abrams brings to the film a very "family oriented" and "dysfunctional" conflict to the movie. Spielberg brings to the film a very story driven and suspense adventure tale. Taking a step back, it's almost like JJ Abram's homage and tribute to Spielberg's ET.

This movie is incredible because it is multi-dimensional story telling. Not many movies go as deep as this one does. It has action, adventure, character development, emotions, and most underrated.. an ending that makes you wanting MORE.

Please go watch this movie. It is truly incredible.

A quick teaser for your enjoyment:

As far as amazing movies that you may not have heard of check out Train de Vie (Train of Life). Saw this movie years ago on CBC and it blew my mind. The movie somehow manages to be political and silly, funny and serious all at the same time. The plot is basically about a jewish town were "the village fool" hears rumours of the Nazi concentration camps and convinces the town to deport themselves to Isreal by pretending they are a concenration camp train. Along the way some of the younger passangers discover socialism.

check it out

Good thread, it's such a shame how every movie thread / topic in CDC history just quickly crumbles into "my favourite movie lists" -- or like the "rate what you recently watched" where every second movie listed has a 8, 9, or 10.

(i'll post a suggestion or two later)

Nice job of describing Super 8! "Goonies" meets "Cloverfield" was a well thought out comment. Elle Fanning (Dakota's sister) showed real acting chops as did Joel Courtenay. Reminded me so much of those "summer Crushes/loves" i had when I was in my tweens and teens.

By the way - one thing I totally missed was the amazing music, that was composed by Michael Giacchino, also the person who did the movie Up.. and tv series Lost.

A movie without the right music is 1/2 as good.. The OST for Super 8 was just.. heart warming.

American Gangster

While based on a true story a lot of the movie is fictional, but nevertheless great acting by both Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. An honourable mention to Ruby Dee who portrayed Frank Lucas' (Denzel's character) mother, which I think she got an Academy Award nomination. I really enjoyed how the movie portrays both leading characters in their own scenes and subplots in a predominantly mutually exclusive manner up to the point where Russell arrests Denzel at the end of the movie. At this point do the main characters finally "meet" each other after a wild goose chase of confronting mass police corruption, evidence collecting and using informants and whatnot. It also serves as a good history lesson as to how rampant heroin abuse emerged in Harlem during the Vietnam War. The streets of Harlem were definitely depicted as raw; top notch marks for authenticity.

While not my favourite movie of all time, it's up there. I'd say top 10. Probably Ridley Scott's last good movie that he directed (haven't seen Prometheus yet).

Edit: Here's the arrest scene I was talking about. The music is quite fitting.

Requiem For A Dream:

Why is this an incredible movie? I can't find a single fault with it. The direction (Darren Aranovski) the acting (Jared Leto, Jennifer Connolly, and the unbelievable portrayal of Sara Goldfarb by Ellen Burstyn). This movie portrays the lead character as Addiction and tells the story of it's victory over a series of different addicts. It is raw and realistic, taking the audience from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows throughout a calendar year. The soundtrack is totally on point throughout and the editing moves the movie along at a frenetic drug-addled pace. Just one of the most perfect pieces of cinema I have ever seen.

The Prestige

A movie about magicians, which unfolds like a magic trick in itself. The acting and directing are fantastic, and the concept unique and compelling.

But the real treat in this movie is in re-watching it (multiple times, even), and seeing how many times you, the viewer, were completely played.
