Jets, Kane working on lengthy deal - via @winnipegnewshttp://shar.es/tlh3N via @sharethis

THE Winnipeg Jets and Evander Kane's representatives are working on a long-term contract that could see the player signed for up to six years.

Negotiations are moving at a methodical pace with both sides motivated to strike a lengthy pact and get it completed well before training came according to multiple sources involved in the deal.

Contracts signed by New York Islanders sniper John Tavares and Toronto Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel are being used as examples. Both players signed long-term packages coming out of their entry level contracts, Tavares a six-year deal worth $33 million and Kessel a five-year pact worth $27 million.

If for some reason, and at this point that seems highly unlikely, the negotiations turn to a shorter bridge-type contract, Kane's deal could be along the lines of the two-year pacts signed by James Neal and Logan Couture worth $5.75 million following the expiration of their entry level deals.

Following his 30-goal campaign last year, Kane has put himself in a position to hit a financial home run. The 20-year-old had 30 goals and 27 assists last season and while his game needs some rounding out, he has shown the ability to produce at a high level in the NHL.

Kessel scored 36 goals and 24 assists in his third pro season on a superior Boston Bruins team. Tavares had 31 goals and 50 assists in the last year of his entry level deal before his six-year deal kicked in.

There has been some talk this summer that Kane is reluctant to return to Winnipeg but the tone of these negotiations would suggest the exact opposite and that his actual desire is to become a franchise player with the Jets.

I suspect that a bunch of agents are currently trying to get their players on extensions to long term front loaded contracts that probably won't be permitted in the new CBA.

Funny that whine the league and NHLPA are duking this out, the individual teams and players are going to be doing everything they can to circumvent it by getting in deals under the wire.

I have no idea why the league hasn't put out a mandate that no new contracts will be accepted by the league until a settlement is in place (totally within their right to do so). It looks bad for their owners to be giving these huge deals during negotiations.

I hope he re-signs for 5-6 years!

Once his game rounds out and he acquires more dimensions to his play, he could be a dominant player!

That's a pretty tough sell for anyone. "I know you haven't signed these really important players to your team yet, but you can't sign anyone until we get this CBA thing figured out." "Are you kidding me?" Everyone would be in the same boat but for players with options to go elsewhere (KHL, SEL, etc) that would be an issue.

The best they could do is caution against deals that could become as illegal under the new CBA, but even then they would have had to have notified all teams fairly rather than let some sign deals and others not. It's not like they could enforce penalties anyways if it isn't a problem based on the expiring CBA.

Because this would be illegal as it would contravene the current CBA which is perfectly legal until it expires Sept 15th of this year.

Re-upping Kane is the most important thing the Jets have to do this summer. Get him on this supposed 6-year deal, good $$$ ($5m?), and build around him.

so Kane is pretty much signing right till he'll be a UFA, doesn't really change anything although I'd be careful if I was Kane as if the Jets trade him Kane loses all his power of holding out as a RFA...

I'll say 23mil for 4 years. 5.75mil/year. This kid is going to be one of the best goal scorers in the league in the near future.

Wesley Myron + Andrew Alberts for Kane's rights. Play Kane with the Sedins and he'll get 50 goals
