As for the Canucks, I don't see how signing these studs is currently feasible. How do you ask the core of your team to play for below market value and then offer $100M+ to a big name free agent? As great as that free agent may be, how does that affect moral and chemistry?
It's an interesting point, one I've argued for in the past. On the flip side playing devils advocate one could argue guys like the Sedins, Burr, kes, Garrison and Hammer want to win more than they want to make maximum money. With the Sedins window of dominance potentially coming to an end in the next 3-4 seasons maybe they would look favorably on a big free agent splash. Getting Weber or Semin at bloated contracts may be justifiable to them if it meant getting them a
Ring. A few more years of "fair" underachieving may be less favorable then winnig a cup. The Sundin acquisition didn't really Appear to have any ramifications on our ability to resign our core at good rates.
Another side point would be that the Sedins, Kesler and Burrows all overachieved after signing their long term Deals. Had they all been signed after their breakout years they would likely be looking at much Better compensation.
