Ed Willes' Tweets on Gillis/Weber

Recommended Posts

What if Weber becomes the next Redden or what if we still can't win a damn cup with Weber? What would you do then? run him out of town like Bobby Lu?

You can hardly blame Gillis on this one as I don't think the Canucks had the cap space to sign Weber.

Am I the only one who wanted Garrison more than Schultz? I mean we weren't getting both, and I figure maybe it would be best to get the guy with some NHL experience... remember Fabian Brunnström anyone?

Willes is definitely biased against Aqualini and Gillis. However, here are a couple of facts.

1) Gillis has used a competitive team, great city/additional perks as his selling point to say that the Canucks are one of the elite teams that great UFA's will come to. He has said this on local radio stations, papers/etc

2) This method has failed this year and epitomizes the Gillis swing and miss method. In his tenure, the Canucks have gotten 2 meaningful free agents in Mats Sundin and Dan Hamhuis. Yeah we got Jason Garrison but he received a 6 year deal worth 4+ mill for one good season. It was overpayment at its finest. This year has epitomized the Gillis swing and miss routine. He did not get promising prospect Justin Schultz, lost out on Weber (if he had signed with the Canucks on an offer sheet he would have won irregardless of whether the Canucks actually got him) and even when he got his man in Garrison he paid above market value for 1 good season. Also what did all 3 of these guys have in common? All were from BC. So does Willes have a point? Of course he does. Should every Canuck fan be upset? They should because the crap Gilles is feeding us doesn't make sense and is not true.

Weber is the real deal and if you were going to blow some money and a long contract on a player in the NHL, this is the guy you want to make that bold move for, because you will not be disappointed, he will be a threat until he reaches the age of 40.

I think you've chosen to miss his point and justify this garbage article by naming 3 teams out of 30.

It doesn't matter where a player wants to play and it certainly doesn't matter what reports say about where a player wants to play it all comes down to $$$$$. If Gillis signed shultz to the money he got you'd have me on your anti-gillis agenda of rage tour.

As for Weber, the tweets said that HE wanted to play in Vancouver, and that OWNERSHIP wanted him here. Again, this is a different situation than, say, the Washington Capitals missing out on him. HE wanted to play here, OWNERSHIP wanted him here, GILLIS didn't get it done, HOLMGREN did. See the difference?

Lol.

Typical cdc. Didn't get the guy they wanted so now they make excuses. Some things never change, and for that matter, some members never change.

I'm not saying a 14 year deal is the way to go, but were are these bold moves MG spoke of?

Btw, I laugh that you run down the Shultz and Weber signings and praise the Garrison signing. Lol

What if Garrison becomes the next Gragnani and isn't quite the "PP Specialist" that he's heralded as?

THIS IS A RISK THAT EXISTS WITH EVERY CONTRACT THAT'S SIGNED!

How old are you? I'm not debating with a pre-teen, am I?

Does Schultz get us a cup this season? No.

Then why make a 'WE NEED A CUP NOW' argument and then bring up how sad we are because we lost out on Schultz?

The benefit of being on the crybaby side of these arguments is that, technically, the gm can never be on the winning side. 'He did this! Why!?!'. 'He didn't do this! Why not?!?'. 'Waaaaah!'

He also would've COST NOTHING, which is/was his main appeal. You're effectively getting a free 2nd round pick.

Not comparable to either Garrison or Weber.

According to Willes. I haven't seen a single thing from any other source that suggested this. My guess is that he's making assumptions (as usual)

I totally agree with Willis. Gillis has always stated that he wants to make Vancouver a more attractive place for Free Agents and here are two BC guys who wanted to play for the Canucks and he blew it.

Weber sure. Schultz wanted top 4 minutes. No way...gotta earn that and Oilers more likely to give him that over Canucks. Not just about location.
