Lupien saying the rights things - understand's deals of this magnitude take time but you get sense the quicker the better. Lupien admits a trade to Florida would make the most sense for his client. Lupien and Loungo will meet in 3 weeks in Bathurst, New Brunswick at Loungo's annual golf tournament and talk about his future.

Why Roberto Luongo makes a world of sense for Chicago:

If there’s one issue in Chicago based on performances last year, it’s in goal. Both Corey Crawford and Ray Emery played very average and when you’re a team whose goal is to win the Stanley Cup, that’s just not going to get it done.

This offseason has seen one big name goalie made available through a trade in Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo and the Blackhawks apparently have interest. The question remaining here is: Why aren’t they making a bigger push to land him?

We know all about the Chicago-Vancouver rivalry and how the Blackhawks have found ways to get into Luongo’s head but when you boil down the numbers, Luongo makes Chicago perhaps the best team in the West.

If you take the numbers he put up last year in Vancouver and put a goalie of that caliber in the Windy City (.919 SV% , 2.41 GAA), suddenly Chicago isn’t just fighting for a playoff spot, they’re probably sitting atop the conference. Compare that to what Crawford did last season (.903 SV%, 2.72 GAA) and it’s a stark improvement.

Then again, the issue here might not be with Chicago, it could be all on Vancouver. After all, why would the Canucks want to find a way to help a chief rival out with a glaring issue? While the Blackhawks have reportedly dangled Dave Bolland to Vancouver, you’d have to imagine the price for Chicago to deal with them would be a bit higher.

On Luongo...

For some time now I have been told the asking price for Luongo is essentially way higher than the market value...However, this morning, through three separate texts, I am getting the impression the Canucks may be getting closer to moving Roberto...

The teams are the same...Toronto, Florida, and Columbus, however I am getting a sense that one of these three teams has come up with, as one source put it in his text "a creative way of re-thinking the Luongo deal."

Another source said, "More confident than I have been since this started that Roberto is on the move. Possibly as early as this weekend." I will be tracking this very closely.

Smart money says Luongo's been dealt, awaiting labor resolution

Forget about show business, truth is there's no business like business, it supersedes all else because all else flows from it. In hockey the business of a new contract between the NHL and the NHLPA is of such import it may be holding up a trade.

Roberto Luongo is headed somewhere, that is as much a given as the greed of NHL owners and players. For my money he's already been dealt, the deal all but completed in July and all over but the thousands of column inches media will give it once it's been announced. It's a deal that will see him back in Florida, where, as we all know, he already is. So why don't the Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers announce now? Because there are details that hinge on the contract the NHL and NHLPA will finally agree to. In other words, they're waiting for the business to be straightened out.

Luongo has a decade left on his deal and his cap hitis $5.3 million per, sizable, though not out of line for a gold-medal-winning, all-star goalie, and what is coming back in return is going to depend upon where the salary cap winds up. If it drops lower than expected, Vancouver may get less than they'd like, or may even be forced to take a contract in return.

Roberto Luongo: Homeward Bound

There have been rumblings all along that it's Florida and Luongo's demeanor this off-season, or at least when he's been in the public eye, suggests a total lack of concern. He was very relaxed while playing in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas last month, in fact he was in a positively jovial frame of mind about his future. And not only did he say that he was leaving Vancouver he told another poker player from Florida that he may be playing there again.

There was that magazine, the Fourth Period, back in late June that claims a source close to it all said Luongo was only willing to waive his no-trade contract to get back to Florida. The magazine said that what was holding up the deal was Florida's reluctance to include young forward Nick Bjugstad; surely that was resolved and the hold-up, again, became money and the cap.

There was also the dinner he did or did not have with Michael Yormark in Las Vegas while at the poker tournament. Yormark happens to be the president of the Panthers and before leaving for Vegas from Florida, he'd tweeted "On the road again this week. Heading to vegas for a very important dinner on monday night." That could be code for Luongo, no?

Obviously Luongo is the one who holds all the cards, with that no-trade clause he can simply say 'no'. I might have believed it could be Toronto or Chicago earlier, but the lateness - training camps open in a month if there's no lock-out - suggests he's relaxed about it because he knows where he's going. He's not worried about house-hunting in another NHL city because he has a house in Miami and he knows he'll be back there playing for the Florida Panthers.

And as soon as the NHL and NHLPA stop fighting over who gets how much of the billion plus that fans send their way each season, we'll know about it, too.

Talks regarding a Roberto Luongo trade have been quiet lately:

“I heard a rumor that the Panthers are making a push to get Roberto Luongo. Have you heard anything about this? Would this move affect their ability to put a team together that can compete for cheap? — Conor Murphy

The Panthers’ interest in Luongo is more than a rumor, as it has been widely reported for months—although, lately, as with so many other potential moves around the league, like Doan’s free agency and the possibility of a Bobby Ryan trade, it has been all quiet lately.

As for the question of making Luongo part of an affordable contender, it’s certainly possible. The Panthers currently have 22 players under contract for 2012-13, at a salary cap charge of $53.74 million. That is the seventh-lowest total cap outlay in the league, ahead of only the Blues, Stars, Senators, Jets, Islanders and Coyotes.

Luongo’s annual cap hit is $5,333,333—he makes a salary of $6.714 million through 2017-18, then $3.382 million for 2018-19, $1.618 million for 2019-20 and $1 million for each of the last two years of his deal. From a pure cap standpoint, adding Luongo would bring the Panthers to just over $59 million, which ranks in the middle of the league—16th overall.

But if the Panthers do trade for Luongo, there will be players going the other way. Whether any would come off the active roster remains to be seen, of course, but adding Luongo would give Florida three goaltenders, as Scott Clemmensen and Jose Theodore are already there.

Removing $1.2 million for Clemmensen or $1.5 million for Theodore would bring the Panthers’ cap charges down one or two spots in the rankings, so even with Luongo, Florida would be able to contend within the bounds of financial reason. The key is that the Panthers’ only player with an annual cap hit of more than $5 million is Lady Byng Trophy winner Brian Campbell, at $7,142,875.
