Turning Luongo into Evander Kane

13 posts in this topic

Just for laughs..

Let's pull a Holgrem on the Jets and offer sheet Evander Kane to a front loaded 10 year contract with cap hit of ~5M. Which would cost us some good draft picks - first, second and third round picks.

Trade Luongo for either a) first and a second (ambitious), (B) first and a third, or even © second and a third. Frankly a net of first rounder in 2013 for evander kane is quite worth it.

Get 'er done!

Due to this conclusion it makes your proposal somewhat reasonable- ignoring of course the simple fact that Winnipeg which is currently working on a similar cap hit but with a 6 year deal with Kane, would likely match.

Unfortunately WPG has tons of cap space, so Kane isn't going anywhere unless he's traded or offered something stupid like a 14 year $110m contract.

Not every BC born RFA wants to nor will end up in Vancouver. And as someone stated, the Jets have a ridiculous amount of cap room. No way they don't match.

Wouldn't work. That cap hit is manageable and Kane is so young a 10 year deal would still have him earning significant yearly salary at the end as he'd be in his prime.

The only thing you could possibly do is turn it into a deal that extends at least into his late 30s so you can lower the last few years and has significant signing bonuses at the beginning to try and cause issues with how much cash Winnipeg can afford up front. Even then they likely match, but if they didn't the deal would still have a big cap hit compared to his value this early in his career.
