Forgive me if I'm jumping the gun a bit, but the women kick off their Olympic campaign THIS Wednesday against reigning world champs Japan. I wasn't in town for the qualifiers but there seemed to be a good amount of buzz generated then so I'm hoping we can get behind our team again.

Here's an excellent write-up/intro to the team from Daniel Squizzato:

If you follow him on twitter he will also provide some very colourful play by play commentary =)

Again, sorry if this is early or if this should actually go into a general Olympics thread.

Putdowns and sexual innuendo. Nice.

We have a World Class footy team to support and this is the best we can do?

The Canadian Ladies, ranked 7 in the World, are in tough just to make it out of their group. Japan (3) and Sweden (4) are both ranked in the top 5 in the World. South Africa is ranked 61 so Canada must pick up 3 points in their second match to have a realistic hope to move on.

Best of luck, girls! A medal is within reach!

Yup. Lots of ex-Caps too. I remember the days when the Whitecaps had Lang, Neil, Andrews, McLeod, Timko, Sinclair...well...essentially 3/4 of the National team.

Canada down 2-0 at the half vs. Japan. They had a strong first 30ish minutes, but Japan came on late in the half and just started pouring on the pressure.

USA and France tied up at 2 a piece at halftime. USA went down 2-0 early but Wambach scored on a head (surprise, surprise), and Alex Morgan got the 2nd back.

Nice win for the Ladies this morning after a shaky first half and an even shakier opening 7 minutes of the 2nd.

Christine Sinclair is awesome! Arguably the best woman player in the world.

3-0 is just what Canada needed. The Sweden match Tuesday should be a gooder!

The loss of Robyn Gayle is fricken scary though. Down 3 defenders with Zurrer, Chapman and Gayle all possibly unavailable for the next game.

Also, Abby Wambach full on got punched in the face by Lady Andrade in the USA vs. COL game. Andrade claims it was an accident...sure don't look accidental to me:

The Canadians need a result against Sweden. finishing second gives them a much better match-up in the knockout stage.

Not to be overly critical, but this team has a history of underperforming in important situations. It's time they went out and surprised us all in a good way...
