One way colonization mission to Mars, 2023 - Mars One

45 posts in this topic

I do agree that a one-way mission is the only way to go in terms of progress. Doing a bunch of one week return trips to the moon is pointless. I don't know if I agree with the selection process though, it will be tricky as all people would need to be well-rounded individuals with science backgrounds and a useful specialisation.

Not sure if a reality tv show will make enough money to fund this though... i'm sure some episodes will be really boring as they watch plants grow.

So will it be 40 randomly selected people or will a bunch of people throw their names into the lottery and 40 will be selected?

This thread is just baffling.

If human beings ever try to colonize another planet it won't be a democratic decision. It also won't be a frickin lottery to choose who gets to go either. Whatever organization does this, be it country or corporation, the individuals will need to be highly trained and skilled people who know how to spell volunteer correctly for a start.

This isn't going to happen it's just a publicity stunt. Christ sake.

So if Luongo goes to Mars, does he still count towards the salary cap?

In before the: "Luongo's contract expires in 2022 dumbass!"

Old idea but an interesting one.

Legitimate scientists have suggested a one way mission to Mars would not only be more feasible for design reasons but that it would also have greater scientific benefits. Learning about other planets can largely be done with robots and probes. However, one goal of manned missions to heavenly bodies is to learn how to colonize space. Long term or one way missions inherently necessitate understanding and honing the skills necessary to accomplish this.

Scientists such as Carl Sagan have suggested that these skills will be absolutely vital to the long term survival of our species. That is, the colonization of space will mean that we are not forced to keep all our eggs in one basket.

All that being said, I have serious doubts about the ability of this particular iteration of the idea to succeed.

I'm pretty sure they'll only be opening the applications to people in specific fields. I doubt they'll just take any joe schmoe off the street, maybe in the future when a base camp is completely established and they are ready to increase the population (though they may just do that through copulation and breeding among themselves)

I once watched a documentary about this on The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror X. Really interesting.

6 billion is only .90 cents for every person on earth to contribute...... And if we weren't spending trillions on war, this project would have already left.
