Land of the free

Rage-edit:

I KNOW THAT THE CANUCKS DON'T PLAY IN THE US, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. BUT I'M A MEMBER OF TWO FORUMS, THE FIRST BEING THIS, THE SECOND BEING A SWEDISH FORUM, IN SWEDISH, WITH SWEDISH PEOPLE, AND I THOUGHT TO MYSELF "GEE, SINCE AMERICANS ARE SO GOOD AT OTHER LANGUAGES, ESPECIALLY SWEDISH SINCE IT'S SUCH A BIG COUNTRY WITH NINE MILLION INHABITANTS, WHY DON'T I POST ON THE SWEDISH FORUM?" NO, I DIDN'T THINK THAT.

So, being from Sweden, I don't really get to meet that many Americans, and the Americans I do meet normally turn out to be democrats who think that the "socialistic society" we've got here is great (free university, free dental if you're under 20, free health care and so on). I never get to meet a real Tea Party/Republican/"I hate homosexuals" kind of guy.

I have got a few questions for Americans about your freedom, so let's start off:

1) how is America the "Land of the Free"? I mean, you've banned homo-marriage (don't know if that is the politically correct term in English, but yeah,) thus removing the right to be free, to choose what's best for him or her, in his or her life.

Don't come here like "it says so in the Bible". Like yeah, it does, but why should that matter? What if you don't believe in God, or not in that way, or in another God? Why should religion affect laws? Wasn't your country founded by people (I, of course, mean the Europeans here; not the native Americans) who had to flee from their native countrys because they weren't allowed to believe what they wanted there?

2) How can it be okey for education to cost money? I mean, sure, you can get scholarships and get to go to collage and even the university for free, but not everyone can get that. How is it okey to punish a child for what their parents did or didn't do? And you don't only punish the child, you punish the child's children, too. And you even punish THEIR children. And by punish I mean not giving them the opportunity to get the education they want, this makes them make less money when they get older, and not being allowed to pay for their children when they need to go to collage.

I've got plenty more, but I'm tired.

Please flame away!

I am an American, and I will 100% agree with every point you have raised in this post. To be frank, "Land Of The Free" is complete hogwash. It sickens me to no end how money-grubbing religious lobbyists in this country have such sway over certain politicians as to affect laws that would violate others in this country's right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The education thing is also one of my real pet peeves. It certainly seems like to me like a lot of our children are actually being discouraged from going to college, by a LOT of different people...because in my opinion, it's much easier to rule a nation of brain-dead sheeple than educated citizens with a mind of their own and resistance to stupidity.

Firstly, this is a site for a Canadian hockey club. Very few posters here are American. If your going to bash people for being ignorant, you should at the very least make sure you are addressing the right country.

To respond to your points from my Canadian perspective:

1) Some people have the idea that it is up to them to choose what marriage means or what a homosexual is. I disagree with this and think marriage between any two consetning adults should be legal. Also, it's not all states that ban same-sex marriage. Several states allow it and several allow it de facto through "civil unions" etc... Obama has recently come out in support of gay marriage, so things are likely to change in the USA, just not in an election year. Also, same sex marriage has only been legal in Sweden for 3 years. Maybe ask your dad why his generation banned it.

2) The idea behind not having free university is small government. By making college "free", the money has to come from somewhere. You have to increase taxes. In Canada our college is very cheap compared to America but not free. And honestly there are arguments to both sides. It's great to have free education, but why should a guy working manual labour pay extra taxes so some teenager can dick around in Philosophy classes for four years and have the summers off to backpack and smoke pot? There's no right answer here. Freedom can be interpreted many ways. Personally, I think Canada has a pretty good system, although things should be slightly cheaper here.

Guest BuckFoston

I don't understand why you are dying to meet some arrogant, ignorant, right wing nut job who is, on top of it all, a bible thumper.

Or the extreme liberal opposite, for that matter.

When I meet nice, non fanatical muslims, I don't sit there thinking, gee, what a bummer. I'm much rather run into a jihadist.

Oh, at the real reason you haven't met the kind of American you are hoping to meet, is because they rarely travel outside of their own borders and have no interests in other cultures.
