Land of the free

So I, being from Sweden, I don't really get to meet that many Americans, and the Americans I do meet normally turn out to be democrats who think that the "socialistic society" we've got here is great (free university, free dental if you're under 20, free health care and so on). I never get to meet a real Tea Party/Republican/"I hate homosexuals" kind of guy.

I have got a few questions for Americans about your freedom, so let's start off:

1) how is America the "Land of the Free"? I mean, you've banned homo-marriage (don't know if that is the politically correct term in English, but yeah,) thus removing the right to be free, to choose what's best for him or her, in his or her life.

Don't come here like "it says so in the Bible". Like yeah, it does, but why should that matter? What if you don't believe in God, or not in that way, or in another God? Why should religion affect laws? Wasn't your country founded by people (I, of course, mean the Europeans here; not the native Americans) who had to flee from their native countrys because they weren't allowed to believe what they wanted there?

2) How can it be okey for education to cost money? I mean, sure, you can get scholarships and get to go to collage and even the university for free, but not everyone can get that. How is it okey to punish a child for what their parents did or didn't do? And you don't only punish the child, you punish the child's children, too. And you even punish THEIR children. And by punish I mean not giving them the opportunity to get the education they want, this makes them make less money when they get older, and not being allowed to pay for their children when they need to go to collage.

I've got plenty more, but I'm tired.

Please flame away!

1)I think the term 'Land of the Free' is a dubious term. Depends on what level we ask to be free. I dont understand the ban on gay marriage . Its a state level thing the supreme court has not ruled on it yet. I am for equality for gays and straights.

For me, freedom means I can move to any state and live anywhere I want , but even that has limits. Lets put it this way, I believe it freer than some other countries.

2) I have gone back and forth on education. To provide an undergraduate degree free , the cheapest way to do that is simply to have grade 13 to grade 16 .

But then everyone would have a degree so dishwashers would have a degree and then you need a masters degree to get a real job and on and on. All we would have done is slide the scale forward 4 years.

So I like the idea of providing access via student loans and scholarships so those who really want it will go get it.

Hope this helps

:)

I have never been to Sweden but hear its very pretty there.

Thanks, I see what you're thinking, but I don't think everyone would use the system, even if it were free. You earn more money as if you go to school for ten years and then start working as a dish-washer, than you do if you go to school for 15 years, and then start working as a dish-washer.

As for Sweden being nice, sometimes is it, but not always:

What? We're just being helpful! Not too many bible thumpers 'round here.

But just to take the high road I beleive if he is looking for some he can go to freerepublic.com and find some hard core right wing americans there but I doubt they will take kindly to Swedish preaching on their American way.
