Former TV reporter pleads guilty to sexual assault of minor

Former Global television reporter Ron Bencze, 44, has pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault of a minor.

At a sentencing hearing in Surrey Thursday morning Bencze admitted to sexually assaulting the child, who was a friend of his own son, for a period of seven and a half years, until the child was 14 years old.

The Crown is seeking a sentence of two to three years in jail, while the defence is seeking a conditional sentence of 18 to 24 months.

Crown lawyers indicated they intend to stay the eight remaining charges against Bencze, which involve two other alleged victims.

Judge Robin Baird said there were many issues to consider in the case and reserved his sentencing decision until after August 27.

Bencze was arrested in January 2011 and originally charged with nine counts of sexual assault and sexual interference with a minor.

He was a reporter with Global TV in Vancouver at the time of his arrest but has since been fired by the organization.

Ya, this douche may even get a conditional sentence yet a guy can get 6 years for punching a gay guy in a bar with it being classified as a hate crime. Or how about killing a little girl and almost killing her aunt cause the dumbass bitch driver was drunk and she gets 2.5 years (which she is appealing) and this guy may not even get that. Where's Herr Harper and his omnibus crime bill now? Or ole Vic and his "you're with us or with the child pornographers"???????

What I don't get (a'la Global news tonight) is how he isn't classified as a pedophile? Excuse me, the man had illegal sexual contact with a minor child for over 7 years....how is that not a pedophile? Not to mention the other children involved who will never get their cases heard because Mr. Douchebag "Oh I used to be this upright citizen of the community" pleads guilty to one charge and the other charges get dropped due to a plea bargain deal. I hope he gets the maximum it is possible to get according to the laws of this country, but for me, it still won't be enough. A couple of years for the lifetime's worth of damage incurred to his victims is nowhere near enough time, not even remotely close.

Former Global BC reporter Ron Bencze gets four-year jail sentence for child sex assault:

Former television reporter Ron Bencze, who abused a child for a number of years, has been sentenced to four years in prison.

In July, Bencze, 45, pleaded guilty to one charge of sexual assault. Sentencing took place Tuesday in B.C. Provincial Court in Surrey.

Bencze was initially charged with three counts of sexual assault, four counts of sexual interference and two counts of invitation to sexual touching involving three people under the age of 16. He also faced a charge of breaching his bail conditions.

The remaining charges were stayed by the Crown.

The assaults took place between March 15, 2003, and Dec. 31, 2010.

The victim’s mother went to police last January after finding sexual text messages from Bencze — using his work phone — on her 14-year-old son’s cellphone.

Bencze’s relationship with the boy began when the victim was around six years old and the abuse, which began in earnest when the child was nine, included masturbation and oral sex.

The contact occurred almost exclusively at Bencze’s home.

Crown prosecutor Jennifer Lopes had sought a custodial sentence of two to three years, while the defence asked for an 18- to 24-month conditional sentence followed by probation, or an intermittent sentence.

In his reasons for sentence, Judge Robin Baird described Bencze’s behaviour as “deviant and unlawful.”

Baird said Bencze had committed a major sexual offence for which he must pay a heavy price.

Bencze’s sentence includes a weapons prohibition, a DNA order, sex-offender registration and staying away from areas where children congregate (such as parks and community centres) and avoid volunteering or working with children for 20 years.

The victim’s family and supporters burst into sobs, applauded and said, “Yes!” when the sentence was read.

Outside the courtroom, they continued applauding and shouted, “Justice!”

Bencze was fired from Global last April.

I don't think justice in a case like this can ever truly be had. I don't trust that this guy can ever be "rehabilitated" and not be counted on to not pray on youth in the future. I think jail time aside that the priority should be that he never be given an opportunity to harm another youth. I don't suggest that he should stay in jail forever but other preventative measures need to be taken so he doesn't become a repeat offender if he isn't already.
