Is Malhotra useless? No. Is he worth 3 mil a year? Definitely No.

^Malhotra's cap hit is not 3 - it is 2.5 - the NHL average.

58.5%
That was Manny's FO% last year - even after his eye injury. Puts him in a class with Toews and Bergeron.

Manny is not the Canucks' third line center. Comparing him to Jordan Stall and his 6 million cap hit is idiotic (or a host of other higher paid, different role, third line centers who get considerably more ice time in different circumstances). Malhotra was never brought here to score - he is obviously a faceoff specialist and shut down guy on the fourth line, playing with Lapierre on a two-center (if one guy is waived, the Canucks have a second center on the ice), defensive zone start specialist line. People who think his value is intangible would be surprised how many teams would like to have Malhotra playing that role in their lineup. His (and Lapierre's) plus/minus stats are relatively meaningless. The ability to win a face-off, clear the zone and prevent quality scoring chances for the other team's top line is seriously underestimated here (but I doubt it is lost on Schneider, Luongo or the blueliners), and having a fourth line that can perform that role gives the Canucks more options with how it uses it's third line - something that would be a whole lot more obvious if the second line is performing. Manny is not the next whipping boy.

I'm not going to cry if he leaves or anything, but I also wouldn't mind Manny for another season. The guys a leader. The eye thing was the worst thing that could happen to him, but he's shown enough resilience to warrant a fair shake at a cup with Van. He's played through some hell, people won't grasp.

I hate how players with career affecting injuries are thrown under the bus so easily.

Don't think that people really give enough credit to these guys. They have lives outside of the game, but it's hard for some fans to look past their ticket prices and false sense of entitlement.

I think the whole "WE WANT A CUP NO MATTER WHAT!" attitude has to go. It's bandwagon jibber jabber to my ears.

I'd rather win a cup with a team I respect, than with one I don't. It's about the journey, folks!

Everyone knows his time is done not only as a Canuck but in the NHL. His eye has effected his play to a point where he has become worse than a 4th line enforcer. Great guy, good personality and good teammate but a tragic situation.

Buy out his contract or send him down to the wolves where he can coach like Baumgarnter.

Then we sign DOMINICK MOORE. Perfect replacement suited for 3rd line.

If Malhotra comes back and plays because the Canucks feel sorry for him then I will be incensed.
I guarantee he'll be a liability and will only be used for faceoffs since thats the only thing he can do.

Dominic Moore: brother was a prima donna (as basically described by former teammates) who appeared to have little regard for fellow players. Dominic will have played for 10 teams in 10 years and that says something to me. Sure, a good player but I just question the overall character and how it melds with this team. Just me and my biased thinking in relation to the past,

"Biased thinking" indeed; anybody else find it amusing that Mensa candidate Scott Parker is suddenly a font of wisdom to most Canuck fans. Prior to his recent comments (which basically dis Steve Moore for having a Harvard degree) I'm guessing that there wasn't a single member of this board that would have anything complimentary to say about him. As for Dominic I agree with most folks here; he's a decent player but his surname alone would be a massive distraction. Manny isn't quite done yet but unless he rebounds in a big way he might be done and that would be a crying shame. He'll coach somewhere someday I recon.

I love what Manny brings when he is on his game. Its hard for people, who dont know much about the game, to understand how valuable it is to have a player who wins faceoffs as well as Manny. If that is all he can do well and not be a liability defensivly then he is golden. Anything more is a bonus. As far as his eye injury I think we should give him the oportunity to show if his off season training has improved his play. A good example is Mattius Ohlund. He seems to have had a pretty good career after his eye injury.

As Deb wisely said, if Manny canna perform up to standard, he will retire, or become an assistant with the Wolves .. Manny is a classy man, and will "do the right thing" by the Canucks .. for those who want to throw him under the bus, remember, "what goes around comes around", and just hope you never get hurt so bad you canna do your job as well as you used to ..

Manny's return from his eye injury reminds me of Ohlund.

But, with apologies to CanuckCup1316, in my opinion, Ohlund did not ever fully recover.
He may have gone on to win the Norris if not for the permanent damage.
He was definitely my favorite Canuck, Swede, defenceman, etc.
[I believe his infrequent violent outbursts were sometimes (e.g.Koivu elbow attempt to that side) exasperation caused by guys who took advantage too often of his bad side.]

Manny too now has, I believe, a bad side.
Professional hockey players are going to take advantage of any weakness in their opponents.
He's a great guy and a valuable asset for the team.
If his eye can recover some more, and the team can work around the difficulties, he can still be a positive force for us.

Let's see how he plays this season a little bit, but he should be on a short leash. Paying 2.5mil on a 4th liner is ridiculous and the Canucks should ship him out ASAP if possible if he hasn't improved.

although I don't agree with the thread, I don't understand why everyone is coming to malhotras defence. especially while everyone is ripping apart Mason Raymond. Raymond has more points in about 20 less games along with a better +/- . to top it all off mason gets paid less and is younger!

Let's see if I can explain this to you (and the other CDCers that want Malhotra gone). Malhotra's role on this team is NOT to provide scoring. Comparing him to Raymond is really an apples/oranges thing as Raymond's role is (up to this point anyway) as a 2nd line winger.

To clarify what Malhotra's role actually is:

"While Manny Malhotra managed just 18 points (his fewest since 2002-2003) and a career-low minus-11 rating, that doesn't tell the real story of his season. Malhotra was practically a sacrificial lamb, starting an unbelievably-low 13.2% of his shifts in the offensive zone (www.behindthenet.ca), which helped free up the Sedins, for example, to start a league-high percentage of their shifts in the offensive zone." (Scott Cullen, TSN)

Does this make sense? Malhotra directly contributes to the success of the team by taking and winning the majority of his faceoffs in the neutral and defensive zones, which allows the scorers to play more in the offensive zone.

It absolutely hilarious that so many people in this board think that just because a player isn't "elite" or scoring tons of points then said player is a "plug' and useless (kinda like the Hansen thread).

There are players on this team that are not living up to their expectations, Malhotra is NOT one of them.

Kesler was lucky to score 20 this year since the injury to Morrison allowed him to do so.

I doubt Kesler would ever break 15 goals in his career again.

Hey Pasific,

There is no way that Moore will ever come here. The history is too large to ignore. Malhotra isn't out of the game yet, by any margin. If you are truly a Canucks fan you would support Manny and his recovery. Malhotra is in the midst of one of his most gruelling summer training regimens to get back to prime shape. He will be back and better than ever.

Secondly, you need to work on your spelling, mon frere. The PACIFIC Ocean is the largest body of water on this planet. To mispell PACIFIC is a grevious mistake and must not be taken lightly. I propose a week long ban by Admin and all members of the CDC donating a dime each to buy Pasific some fun phonics games.

I think Manny's eyesight is fine. No way he keeps his faceoff percentage so high if it was still a problem.

From what I saw, the reason for the drop-off was a lack of offseason training. And, of course, with the eye injury and treatments he was undergoing, he couldn't train like he normally would. But this year? I expect him to improve a lot.

Try reviewing a little Canucks history. Dominic Moore will never sign with the Canucks.

Looking forward to seeing Manny on the ice come October! ::D

Manny has surprised me with an even better faceoff percentage than usual so far. It is a small sample size, but still...

He's 2nd in the league in faceoff percentage with 70.6%. He's won 24 of 34.

This is true. However, the team only went around 30% in the FO circle against the Sharks last night.

This is the importance of Manny to our team. Thankfully MG sees this and hopefully can extend Manny contract at a reasonable price.
