Next year when Edler and Burr need new contracts

Canuck fans drooling over the possibility of a new toy, happens every year, i even read posts about why we didnt sign alex semin or should we go after andrei kostitsyn? To be fair i do believe that Doan is a piece that we could sorely use, a tough rugged leader. However to pay him 6 mil or more for 4 years would be absoloutely bonkers!

" well our window is closing and we need to win now".. This is garbage because if a team is ran properly thru drafting and economical free agent signing well then there is no window. Just ask the red wings, i guess their window is 15 to 20 yrs?

We have 2.5 mil left on our cap, if we sign Doan to a 6 mil contract it will put us 3.5 mil over the cap. "well we can trade lu for picks and prospects" if you think gillis is getting low balled now on lu offers what do you think other gms will offer when they know we need to get rid of 4 mil in 3 weeks? This is why teams rarely go over the cap in the summer because other teams will rape them in trade offers.

Speaking of windows, our team strength the last 2 president trophy years have been our depth and not just the sedins. How do you propose we compete next season when we wont be able to afford Edler and Burrows who are both entitled to massive raises. Not to mention Lappy, higgins, Raymond are all ufa and Tanev an rfa. ??

I can also see it now this time next year " mg is the worst gm!! Why isnt he signing free agents on the market!!"

This will be the headlines next summer when canuck fans are left out of the party and sweepstakes. W. big name players like getzlaf, perry, iginla, morrow, hartnell, semin,Lupul, roy, zajac, clowe are all on the market as free agents!!

I will be the first to welcome doan w. Open arms if he signs but im not so sure its not a better idea if we wait 1 more summer for players on the same mold that are younger and would cost less (zajac, clowe, hartnell)

Burrows is incredible with the Sedins. I doubt Doan meshes that well with them. I see Doan beasting with Kesler on the 2nd line.

Hahaha, good stuff. No chance that Doan will result in the departure of either of these guys. Gillis would throw Ballard, Raymond, Alberts, and others on waivers before that happens. Also, Malhotra's contract expires meaning anothe 2.5mill off the books next year.

it really depends what doan would sign for....and we dont know what we are gonna get for luongo in terms of a cap return

raymond 2.5m
manny 2.5m
ballard 4.2m

there is still money that can be moved around to make room for burrows and edler

Edler and burrows will combined be paid around 9.5 million next yr. How do we fit that in the cap if we sign Doan 6 mil a year??? Also with the lockout impending dont be surprised if the cap goes down 5 mil!

Yea, so a Luongo deal = we'll be under the cap for this year & cap will rise next year plus Malhtra and Raymond will be free agents so we'll have at least $5 million in cap space from them alone; lets say $3 mill in cap raising totalling $8 million to resign them at the least...I think we're good..

Well.
I don't think we'll be resigning everyone next year.

Manny probably won't be re-signed
Mayray will most likely traded
Lou will be traded

Oh and !!!!!!?????!!!???

We still need to replace those players( raymond alberts mLhotra ballard) on the roster. Unless you want a team full of rookies making 800k. Even then thats 3.2 mil. Plus edler and burrows new salaries ( 9mil togehter?) plus lappy and higgins ufa plus tanev rfa.

Long term contracts will be invalid and cap will be lower in new cba.

I don't see the cap going down as there are too many teams that would need to shed salary to be compliant... much more likely that the cap stays the same for a couple of years until new revenue % for the players catches up. The players are unlikely to accept another rollback of wages.

As folks have said, you subtract Raymond, Malhotra, Luongo, and probably Ballard and you have millions to spare to give those two guys raises.... they each probably get an extra $2 million.

We don't know if Doan will sign here, for how much, and for how long.

We don't know what the salary cap number will be next July 1st.

We don't know how much contracts will get rolled back.

We don't know how many of those choice impending UFA's will actually be available next year (my guess is very few of them).

We don't know if Gillis plans on trading/waiving a big contract.

...We don't know a lot of things - but we DO know that the OP is overreacting.

First of all, getting Doan = Luongo would be cap-dumped.

Secondly, the cap may rise yet again.

Thirdly, there are plenty of UFA's other than Edler and Burrows coming up.

Lastly, for every rumoured player coming in, there are 'OMG CAP!' threads to go with it. Meanwhile, teams like NYR and Philly remain totally unconcerned. It's time to grow up as a franchise and a fanbase. The cap is meaningless.

There's no givens that we'd lose Edler and Burrows. It depends on what Doan signs for if he does come here. It depends on who we choose to bring back, like with Manny, and for how much. It depends on what we move in a deal for Luongo and what we get back as well.

Does it make it more difficult? Sure, but nothing is 100%.

Depth is only valuable if you have the right pieces to begin with. The Nucks don't!!! Doan fills a need that the last 2 years have shown the Nucks sorely need. A true, honest, hard-working, power forward that can out-muscle and out-hit other teams and who has enough nastiness to intimidate.

Booth, Higgins and Kesler intimidate no-one! Our top line of Burrows and the Sedins is likely the softest in the league.

Kassian is a few years away from filling the role of power forward and the Sedins will likely be lesser players by the time he is ready.

Doan on a 3 yr deal makes great sense for this core group and their chance to get a cup.
