[Article] Messier Awarded 6 Million From Grievance Case

F*** Messier. He did nothing for our team but ruin the chemistry and steal the "C" from Linden. Then again management let him. Thank God they don't still run this team. Messier is a piece of crap and gets treated like a God. What a joke.

When Messier came here, everyone expected the early 90s version and instead we got the broken down and slow version. He only scored points because the team had no one else to put in that spot. Yes, the team was bad, but he was supposed to help turn things around. Instead, his slow and worn down play hindered the team rather than helping it.

It was a desperate play for a team that had been a Cup finalist only a few years earlier and then let Ronning, Coutrnall, Adams and most of the core leave for nothing in return. I remember when Ronning wanted a million dollar contract and he was told no, so he went elsewhere. The team was run into the ground and Messier was the olive branch to the fans.

The contract being structured so that he is actually owed money makes sense. Every decision the team made was a bad one. The difference between going after Doan now and Messier then is that we aren't planning to build a team around a 36 year old Doan. They tried to build around Messier and it was awful. Thankfully, we drafted the Sedins during that time in the Canucks history and we wouldn't have had them without Messier. Wrap your brain around that. Yeah, it doesn't make me feel any better either.

Have you looked at his record with a half decent team..............that IS NO JOKE...........Our fans are the joke I'm afraid. It's displayed constantly on here.

Anyway the claim was arbitrated on and found in his favour, it's time to move on. He has 6 Stanley Cup rings and we are still trying to win our first. We need to focus on what this team needs to go the extra step, we might even go on a run of SCs..........

What I know is that Messier outperformed Naslund at the same age with a vastly inferior team. The knock on Messier seems to be that, despite being second in team scoring for the first two seasons and third the next (years 2 and 3 stats suffering due to injury) he didn't singlehandedly take the Canucks to the promised land. If you try to say the same about Saint Markus you get the ever present Canuck-fan excuse that Nazzy never had any decent linemates. Did Messier have better linemates than Naslund? I sure don't think so. Yet to say anything that isn't fullsome praise about Naslund is heresey on this board and, hypocritically, to say anything positive about Messier is to risk insults and invective from the truly fanatical Canuck fans. This case is just another example of the Canucks brass believing their own nonsense about the team being in trouble and possibly even having to re-locate (a laughable conciet at best) and feeling the need to sugar coat their offer to acquire what was at the time one of the most dominant players in NHL history. It was a stupid thing to put in the contract and they got burned. But please don't let me ruin the little hate fest that is going on here; feel free to libel the guy all you want (i.e. the pedophile post which is a disgrace).

When Messier played for the Canucks his first two years he average over 22 minutes per game and close to 4 minutes per game in short handed TOI/G. The only forward outside Bure/Mogilny/Messier to average more than 14 minutes per game was Peter Zezel (who played only 30 games). Naslund and Bertuzzi were young rejects at the time and had not come into their own. There were some decent role players (Scatchard, Walker etc) but the team took soooo many penalties. The team had two career backup goaltenders (good back-ups but not starter material at the time). The D corps had some talent but their best defensive guy was a 20 year old Mattias Ohlund.

The team needed at least 2 top 6 players, a starting goaltender, and a number one defenseman before they could have even competed for a playoff spot. A 36 year old player isn't enough to turn a team that crappy around. Having 2 forwards with over 45 points (one of which was Messier) and 5 forwards with over 27 points won't get you into the playoffs.

When the Canucks finally made the playoff they had 4 forwards with over 50 points and 11 with over 27. Markus Naslund had developed into a good player but was not a super star like Bure. Having a team with 4 lines that could contribute really made a difference. Ohlund had now developed into a legit top 2 guy and with Jovo they made a legit top pairing. The other veteran guys like Murray Baron & Scott Lachance added leadership and stability to the bottom 4. Goaltending still sucked.
