Listening to Mike Peca's assessment of Bouwmeester is everything I need to know about quality of this guy. He seriously needs a change a scenery; maybe playing in Detroit will at least revive his offensive ability.

I think J-Bo would be a good fit for Det in many respects, although he'd have impossible shoes to fill with the departure of NL unfortunately. J-Bo gets a lot of hate due to his salary, but you don't finish 3rd in TOI out of all D-men in the NHL by being an unreliable, terrible defenceman, you just don't.

He's only ever played on bad, unerachieving teams. I'd like to see what he could do somewhere where he's not the only one on the ice at any one given time taking care of defending for his team.

You might if you're the #1 d-man for the Flames :bigblush:

But truthfully, Bouw gets a really bad rep because of his contract. He actually is a very reliable shutdown guy who skates extremely well and can log a ton of minutes (25+).

Never lived up to his true potential because he doesn't use his size to his advantage. The guy is one of the smoothest-skating d-men in the league, and but his numbers have dipped in recent years.

Maybe Detroit can revive him. Bouw has the tools, and it's not hard to see how playing in Calgary could diminish your offensive output.

RIP LB RR PD

Detroit is $13 million under the cap, could see this happening.

Detroits got to do something when it comes to D, they lost Lidstrom and Stuart in the offseason, better make some moves because their blue line isnt looking the greatest as of right now, unless they have somebody in their system they can bring in

What I don't understand is if they are going to trade away their number one d man, then why didn't they trade iggy and kipper at the draft, along with bouwmester and truly rebuild. If fester had done that it would of started an instant rebuild instead of a 3 year one.. I almost feel sorry for the flames fans now, a GM that won't face facts and just rebuild already .and if he's trying to make the playoffs then why trade ur best d man??

Giordano is Calgary's best defenseman, not Bouwmeester - he's more physical and offensively talented than Bouwmeester and is one of the few Flames with a reasonable contract - with the fact that Calgary keeps pinning themselves up against the cap, Bouwmeester's 6.8 is the first thing they should be looking to move. Detroit is not stupid - they are not giving Calgary three decent players for one of the most overpaid, underachieving guys in the league - people here can say Bouwmeester has this and that potential, and is the victim of playing on a bad team, but that is a bunch of soft soap. Calgary will do well to get a 2nd round pick out of it - and if that were offered, they should take the cap space and run.

It has more to do w/ ownership IMO. They don't want to lose boatloads of money over the next 3 years.

What good is cap space if you have nothing to fill it with ? And a 2nd round pick is like a 50/50 chance at landing an NHLer and far slimmer than landing a good NHLer.

That would be even more garbage GMing than what Feaster/Sutter have done.

Obviously Bouwmeester was soooooo over rated when he came to Calgary. He thrived in the Florida system and like Ollie Jokienen has never found his game since. He needs a change of scenery but he isn't a great defencemen anymore. Possibly a 1st rounder.

What good is cap space sounds like a question that a Flames fan would ask - and you are underestimating the negative value of a terrible contract like Bouwmeester's.
The problem is not that there is nothing or no one to spend that cap space on - it is what Calgary chooses to do with the cap space that they clear. Feaster acquired Cammalleri and then Wideman at over 11 million combined, so yeah, what good is cap space if you are going to chase after shiny, overpaid players while your lineup is hopelessly shallow - they may as well keep Bouwmeester if they are going to continue to flounder around and make moves like that. No faith that they are capable of upgrading to be honest. But if people think they are going to get rid of that contract and get a valuable roster player, prospect and pick in return, they are seriously deluded - they will be waiting for Milbury to land another GM position before anything like that takes place. Detroit, if they are expressing interest, are probably assuming that it will be a salary dump - see Feaster as in a position of serious weakness - which he is.

he wants to delay the rebuild another 5 or 6 years so he doesn't have to deal with the rebuilding oilers at the same time. :P
