Here's a post by MR explaining how the game went down:

MR played me so hard that game. Me and Intoewsables got strung along big time . I thought Sharpshooter was being really stupid with his decisions as sheriff, but it all made sense in hindsight when I found out he was mafia.

I have no idea of your mafia experiences, but if you want I can give you the rundown on faction and cult games etc., or link you to a site or two where they are run often for reference. Heck, once things slow down a bit here (mid-Septemeber) I could run a faction game if there is interest.

Okay, here are links to two other places where mafia games are run regularly. It's been years since I frequented the Westeros forums, so not really sure how often they are run now. The Malazan mafia games are more what I am used to and, uh, a little bit different than what I have seen of the games run here.

And if someone else is willing to co-mod (I have limited online times), I would like to try running a Malazan-like faction game here.

Two of the biggest differences between Mafia on CDC and Mafia/Werewolf/Witch Hunt/etc. elsewhere pretty much boils down to: communication away from the thread is allowed, and there is really no separate nightfall/daytime cycle.

Reason for the first point is that there is no way of monitoring the inevitable. Even if the rules were to state "no communication about the game is allowed outside of this thread," there will be those people who disregard that rule and act on their own accord. To avoid any trouble with that, Mafia on CDC pretty much lets anything go, save for the first rule of the game:

The second is the nightfall/daytime cycles. Most places that host similar party games will have the lynching held off until everyone agrees on one single lynch target. Night will then begin, the mafia and other special roles will act, and back to daytime. Fact of the matter is, unless the game goes by rather quickly, those that are still alive get bored and those that are already dead lose interest. Thus, the set timetable for each night cycle - essentially skipping the "night" phase altogether.

By keeping the rules rather simple, new players are encouraged to join while more seasoned players have the luxury of developing new strategies to keep up their lying ruse with the fellow veteran players.
