I thought Detroit was infamous for making players do their time in the minors before bringing them up?

As Intoewsables mentioned, DET has players that can easily fill the departure of Hudler. Saying Brunner is guaranteed top 6 minutes is kind of far-fetched IMHO. Detroit has older, experienced NHL'ers that can fill in to Hudler's spot, what makes you think Detroit is going to just hand an unknown top 6 minutes? You know Detroit has good scouting, but you also forgot to mention Detroit doesn't just hand their players minutes so freely, especially when you've never played a game in North America.

Hell, Detroit has prospects that can replace Hudler's role.

Who cares if no one knows who he is that's not the point

Although I probably would not of picked this player considering what is still out there but he has a valid point about the red wings and there scouting talent

I mean if he does get top 6 minutes on a Detroit team this year he could be a decent pick

Yea, this was basically the mindset when I picked him; thank you for understanding.

Since I love to be the devil's advocate, there's some major difference's I see between these two players. Damien Brunner is a more skill based player who uses speed and open ice to his advantage. Even in the Swiss League Franzen was built like a bull, and played the game more like a power forward, which gave him an advantage when playing in the NHL. Brunnstrom and Brunner are a closer comparison, not only because the first four letters of their name match, but because they both relied on a more open ice game where they could out skate the defensemen rather then being stuck between an NHL players shoulder and the boards. I won't lie and say i know the world about Brunner, because frankly I haven't been keeping up with hockey, however many imports from Europe never really pan out, and that's another reason i believe *()(*()*()*( might not be the life saver these flames fans blindly believe.... but hey when your team can't win or lose properly you have to have faith eh?

True as well. I know there is a risk with Brunner but I took it and will live with it. The game breaker for the pick was that Detroit's scouting brought him in, why not pick him then; if it was any other team, I definitely would not have picked him.

I'd be surprised if Brunner even starts the season with the Red Wings given all the depth they have at forward. They have a ton of players in the system that can fill the void left by Hudler and I really wouldn't be banking on a relatively unknown player from the Swiss league stealing that open spot. He's good but who knows how ready he is for the North American game?

Yea they have depth, but it doesn't mean anything if those depth players are not top 6's....its like the Canucks putting Bitz, a depth player, on the 2nd line...won't really turn out well. And just fyi, he is listed as Detroit's best 'prospect' atm.

Babcock doesn't give out free minutes, that's for sure, but Brunner only signed 1 year so I'm sure they'll play him as much as they can to make him re-sign afterwards. And with the chance of him starting in the minors, so be it....someone picked that Tarasenko guy early too, he will likely start in the minors; no big difference really.

...And just to seal off any other remaining clouds surrounding Brunner:

The questions of will he get top 6 minutes? Well, hear it from Babcock himself...

An older "rookie" at the age of 26, Brunner is a right-handed shooting winger who uses his speed, crafty moves and good hands to stuff the stat sheet.
He played four seasons for Zug of the Swiss Elite League and found much success. In his four seasons playing in his native country, he amassed a total of 190 points in 168 games (via nhl.com).

Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock was impressed with the Swiss forward and told Ansar Khan of Mlive the following:

I know a lot about [Brunner] because I went to the world championships and watched him play...The thing for us is he’s high, high paced, he scored, looks like he has tons of skill...Can he adjust and play the North American game? We’re going to give him every opportunity. He’ll be a top-six forward to start with us, and [we will] see where he goes with us.

Should Babcock's words come to fruition, Brunner would give the Red Wings a viable scoring threat with the right-handed shot they have sought for years.

Adding a pure goal scorer like Brunner gives the Red Wings' already lethal offense more punch.

“I know a lot about him because I went to the World Championships (in May) and watched him play,'' Babcock said Saturday at the NHL entry draft. “The thing for us is he’s high, high paced, he scored, looks like he has tons of skill.

"Loves to score goals,'' Babcock said. “Led the Swiss league (in points) as a Swiss player; I think that’s the first time that’s been done in a long, long time. So good for us. This guy (Brunner) is a shooter and a skater.”

“I went to the World Championship and watched this guy practice every day, I watched him play,'' Babcock said. “I stood in the hallway and let him walk by me. Now, does that mean he’s any good? We think he is. Have I been wrong before? Many times"

“I encouraged Ken (general manager Holland) to come. Ken looked at him and he liked him, too, so we put our best foot forward and we think he’s a good fit. Our top six, (Johan) Franzen and (Pavel) Datsyuk and (Henrik) Zetterberg and Fil (Valtteri Filppula) are all left-hand shots. (Brunner) is a right-hand shot who plays fast.”

“The way I look at it is that you have to make decisions and try to get better,'' Babcock said. “We’ve been able to encourage the kid to join us. He could have gone anywhere he wanted, he chose to be a Red Wing.”

http://bleacherrepor...ed-wings-season
http://www.mlive.com..._babcock_h.html

With that out of the way, the only other question is if Brunner is committed to change his style of play to fit with the NHL. Hear it from himself:

TROY – Many skilled players who flourished in Europe fizzle in North America, where the rinks are smaller and the game is more physical.

Swiss scoring star and new Detroit Red Wings forward Damien Brunner, by all accounts, has the skills to succeed in the NHL. Can he handle the hitting and the grind?

To get accustomed to North American hockey, Brunner said Wednesday he will play for the Grand Rapids Griffins if there is a lockout in the NHL.

“The plan right now is to go back to Switzerland for a couple of weeks and then be back when the American Hockey League season starts, adjust to the small ice and get ready for (Red Wings) training camp,'' Brunner said.

“For three weeks there isn't really much to do here,'' Brunner said. “I would rather go back and get a couple of games to get in shape and come over with good confidence level and then get right into it.''

Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula played one game against Brunner at the Worlds and noticed his quickness, his hands and his shot.

“It's going to be fun seeing him play with us,'' Filppula said. “It's probably going to take a little while (to get acclimated), but he's a good player, he'll figure it out. I don't think you have to tell him too much. He seems like a smart player.''

http://www.mlive.com...ien_brunne.html

...Well there you have it. Idk what else to say or clarify about him; he is a top 6 forward, Babcock said he'll give him top 6 minutes, the guy is determined to adapt to a new style of play here in NA, and to add the cherry on top, he is a lethal player with sensational skills which will allow him to succeed here.

Spoiler

For those who were pessimistic, take out a pen and paper and jot down some notes...this session is now over. Top 6 talented winger, and since most never heard of him, its a good to assume he just sucks? LOL! :picard: ...stick to your own teams please, thanks...

If you believe he will be a top six, why are you spending so much time trying to justify your pick and convince us he will be. It's you pick, it shouldn't matter to you what other people say since you were mocking the people who questioned you as "NHL experts"

I personally do not think he will, Detroits got guys like Tatar, Nyquist, Jurco who have done some time developing. I really don't think guys like Brunner pan out. i.e Brunnstrom.

Let's continue with the draft.
