The Aquilini's own a substantial amount of land in the Eastern end of the Valley. They are partners in the largest dairy farm in BC (which is in Chilliwack), they recently tried to buy up the majority of chicken quota (layer and specialties) in Abbotsford (unfortunately the chicken farm community in Abbotsford is run like a mafia and they were rudely shown the door) and they also have special interest properties throughout.

Their purchase of the AESC and moving of the farm teams will be well received in the community, but it will not be as great as many people think. The entire process of adding an arena and team to Abbotsford was done in the equivalent of the Liberals enacting the HST. It will take forever for the city of Abbotsford to forgive the way it all went down.

However, the surrounding communities will be huge in supporting the baby Canucks. Chilliwack, Mission, Langley etc will deliver lots of fans.

Abbotsford Roughriders? :bigblush:

Here's the current list of AHL teams and their NHL affiliations: http://theahl.com/nh...iations-p171464. There's a handful of AHL teams that share the name of their parent club (i.e., Devils, Senators, Bruins, Stars, Penguins and Sharks). And back when the Canucks' farm team was in Hamilton, they were known as the Hamilton Canucks. Personally, I would prefer they come up with something else.

Maybe they could buy the rights to the 'Moose' name from Mark Chipman?

I would love to go watch the Canucks farm team if they played out in Abbotsford.
Having them, the Giants, and the Canucks around would surely fulfill my hockey fix.

Would it be for this upcoming season? (2012-13) or the season afterward's (2013-14) if the deal did go through, cause the meeting is kinda late (Sept 7th) and the pre-season would be begging right away so they might hold off a year?

Anyone know or have a "theory"?

I think it would be for next year, ahl teams have been signing guys based on who their parent club will be sending down to develop, and like you mention it looks like it would be too close to the games being played to not cause problems

Abbotsford totally bailed out if this happens. I've yet to see a game there just for the Heat, and i'm certain the majority of Canucks fans are in the same boat. Anybody but Calgary's sadsack prospects please. But if it's the Canucks', BONUS!

Meanwhile, it's better now, but Abby might want to look into improving the infrastructure around there if indeed Vancouver's farm team is arriving.

a natural extension of a winning franchise, get the farm closer to the team. Like someone posted right away, most of the long term fans saw this coming.

I would say call em the Abbotsford Orcas, but that might be too close to the Connecticut Whale. :P

Abbotsford Millionaires or Abbotsford Aviators.. I like the sound of both of those.

and I really like the sound of our prospects playing there. I imagine that the Wolves attendance was terrible in Chicago while our prospects played there, too.

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

They should have done this in the first place. The Giants ownership will not be happy about this unless they get a cut.

This would be awesome! As someone who is a Heat fan and works at the arena itself, I would love to see that place bumping on gamenights!

If I still lived on the mainland, I would definitely buy season tickets if they were the Canucks farm team. I went to a few Moose vs. Heat games and they were usually packed (with most cheering for the Moose).

Why would they have any say? They don't have any legitimate grievance except what, theres a better, more appealing form of hockey in the province?

This would be so awesome, I live in Abby and pretty much everyone here doesn't care about the Heat, I think in their last playoff game barely anyone showed up.

Yeah that's pretty much it. There has long been a theory that there is not enough room for another hockey franchise in the Vancouver/ lower mainland area.

Not only will the Giants be affected by a possible move but also other junior teams.

I like the Abbotsford Orcas, it has a bit of a ring to it. Aviators makes me think of the Jets which is OK for now but once the honeymoon is over, the Jets will eventually become a rival..

The entire process of adding an arena and team to Abbotsford was done in the equivalent of the Liberals enacting the HST. It will take forever for the city of Abbotsford to forgive the way it all went down.

Last time I checked the referendum about the arena (and two other buildings) happened well before they were built....unlike the situation with the Liberals/HST. Just a shame that so few eligible voters actually bothered to get out and vote on Plan A.

I'm sorry but the "we didn't want an arena" argument that you've referred to; and that gets rehashed on a regular basis when people in Abby talk about the AESC/Heat, really bugs me. Over 75% of eligible voters didn't care enough to get out and vote on the Plan A buildings. If Abbotsford didn't want it, they should have made their voice heard when they had the chance.

Smart stuff Aquilini. I remember reading something about the Canucks org and their discontent w/ the Wolves affiliation. By purchasing his own farm team - he can run it the way he wants. I bet my Snickers bar that the sleep Dr and all these secret off-ice Canuck programs will be implemented with minor league team as well.

The pros far outweigh the cons here, IMO.
-Cdn markets mean a large media following. The earlier players can adjust and cope with that pressure, the better they'll be long term
- Canucks org will able to follow the prospects more closely
- Fans will get to see them more often
- Young free agents might be more inclined to chose a club that is within close proximity of their parent club. I remember it was a strong factor in Gustavsson choosing the Leafs.

It's a win/win.

EDIT: A little update: http://canuckscentra...-arena/#entry50
