Oh snap, never knew atheist here could also read minds! Pretty impressive!

How in the blue hell did you conclude that I am Christian? If your way out is that you didn't mean that and meant that the jokes were Christian, well, they're not, not at all....

Yo, yo, yo homeslice, perhaps you should take a dose of the very tonic that you previously prescribed to the members engaged in this thread, and "chill out".

We believe that everyone should have the right to preach what they believe, to start a congregation, and to perform ceremonies. This is usually reserved for members of traditional religious sects. We have started a church of our own, based on our beliefs, and will provide our service of ordainment free to anyone who shares our beliefs.

This sounds like talk from a typical cult startup, right? A budding new religion?

Well, it's from The First Church of Atheism. Now featuring over 3,500 ordained ministers.

Turns out that religion, while being flipped the bird at simultaneously, is just too good a gig to get into for it to be ignored. Hello, free money?

I want to go to one of these congregations. What, getting together to make snide remarks about there being no God? Hey look, we have no God and no dogma! (yet). Uh-huh-huh-huh-huh.

Just wondering how preaching what you don't believe works. Or how you can have congregations and ceremonies in a church when you claim you're not religious.

Fascinating.

I actually read Stenger's book 2 years ago :P

And I read his new one this year God and the Folly of Faith.

And yet here you be, slinging the creationist crapola about fine tuning. B)

One requires a brain in order for it to be picked.

There's a reason no one has picked yours yet. That probably because you doesn't comprehend the expression of 'picking someone's brain'.

Stay in school kid, it seems as if you're going to really need it.

The Fine Tuning book was a decent argument against fine-tuning. God and the Folly of Faith was like reading the atheist version of Lee Strobel :D

Earth's complexity and habitability is a highly specious, misguided, and egocentric rationale for there being a creator.

I wasn't saying a deity fine-tuned it. I was saying that it is fine-tuned.

Okay, but saying that is in itself highly deceptive of what you're trying to convey. Earth is really good at supporting us. Yes. But the terminology you're using makes it seem like you're arguing that god made it extra-special just for us.

You have to be really careful with what you type because things can easily be misunderstood. Especially on an internet forum.

And to be honest I think a decent case can be made for a "god" and since the internet has way more atheists I like to try and at least present some of the case for "his" existence. If nothing else to at least promote critical thinking.

So, before space was shown to be flat, the religious view was that the universe wasn't finely tuned through the big bang??

What about before the big bang? Was the religious view that the universe was finely tuned then too?

Before the discovery of the big bang, there was less research altogether of origins of the universe. So there wasn't any dialogue in terms of fine-tuning or not. Evolution wasn't as talked about either. The entire discussion didn't exist. People had other evidences for belief in God, some of which is just plainly accepting truth presented by Scripture.

This most recent response of yours is almost parallel to a theist saying "dinosaurs didn't exist because the bible didn't mention them!" Sharpshooter, you're better than this.

Did you get any of the video presented? The explosion of the big bang and the closeness of expansion and contraction of the universe is extreeeeeeeeeeemely unimaginably close. It's like blasting something into the atmosphere and perfectly finding the escape velocity for perfect orbit. That's a universe fine tuned.

Evolution is not permission.

And 99.9% of all species that ever existed have gone extinct....how can you possibly consider that 'fine-tuning'?

This is the best atheism has to offer? This is child's play.

Our planet is fine-tuned for LIFE.

Species die and other species replace them. 99.9% of all species that ever existed have gone extinct how do you even make that claim when evolution produces more and more complex species? This argument is splitting hairs. Life exists on our planet, it is fine tuned for the ebb and flow of life. Name me one planet with life on it?

Do it, name me one planet with life on it.

First of all Evolution=/=Atheism. Second, if the planet were fine-tuned for life there would be no evolution, as species wouldn't have to adapt to survive.

So if they find concrete evidence of life on another planet what then? Life can form and survive in very harsh climates, the proof of that is in the the history of the earth. Ice ages and interglacial periods have been picking off species for as long as there has been life and will continue to do so. We are not immune to these climate changes. Technology will prolong our existence but it is an inevitability. This is the time for humans, It will come to an end. Finally the crab people will rule the earth. Hardly a fine tuned planet for humans.

That article just puts more weight on the fact that our planet is extraordinary and fine tuned.

The upshot is that scientists might not need to pin their hopes for alien lifeon a planet like Earth, whose circular orbit keeps it in the middle of the habitable zone all the time.

We will be.

But we aren't. So my argument stands as our planet and galaxy is fine tuned while your argument banks on the condition of everyone's death.

Need I say more?

Hmm.

Reading comprehension, how does that work? My argument stands on the grounds that we evolved the way we are due to the conditions in our universe causing us to follow a certain path. Your argument is "Earth can sustain life, MUST'VE BEEN JESUS!"

All species eventually go extinct. Whether this is by a mass event causing widespread death, or the evolution into new species is irrelevant. I never said anything about that 2012 crap.

Me - our planet sustains life

You - evolution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me - ?

Evolution does not refute the fact that our planet can sustain life. Because our planet can sustain life, it is considered fine tuned. Extraordinary. Unique. What does evolution have to do with it?
