This explains why AV never wanted to help Gillis throw Luo under the bus vs. LA:

It's easy to forget how much Roberto Luongo has accomplished in his career, particularly during his six years in Vancouver.

He's currently second in the NHL in wins among active goalies behind Martin Brodeur. He's won an Olympic Gold Medal, two IIHF World Championships and reached Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

He's a four-time NHL All-Star, a Jennings Trophy winner, a three-time Vezina nominee and runner-up for the Hart and Lester B. Pearson trophies.

Here are a few of his achievements with the Canucks: He leads the team in all-time wins and shutouts, lowest GAA in a season, most shutouts in a season, most wins in a season and longest shutout streak.

Re: Letting go.

Not sure, noheart.I see Luo on the front page of CDC and he is still listed on the team's roster.

Luongo let go immediately -like before, during and especially after game 5 vs. LA.

The Canucks players may be confused as Luo has not been traded. They are unsure of letting go just yet, naturally.

AV clarified Luo's stance when interviewed in Montreal,so AV has let go.

The only member of the Canucks that is wishy washy and cannot let go is Gillis.

He seemed able to let go after initial denials but now seems more in the letting go denial camp yet again.

Surely,we need a GM that is willing to 'let go' before the rest of us can move on.

I'd invest 9.3 million of our cap hit in goaltending, considering the goalies play every minute of every single game and are the most important players on an ice hockey team.

Think about it, the goalie is far more important to a team's success than just 1 forward. Sidney Crosby may score 50 goals and 120 points and be directly responsible for even 100 of those goals scored, but a good goalie like Quick, Lundqvist, Luongo etc. is responsible for every single goal scored against in ever single game.

I'd rather have the best possible goaltending all season long rather than 1 good goalie, 1 average backup and a bunch of tertiary players. Face it, the NHL is a goaltender's sport, and the position is similar to the quaterback in football. You don't win Cups anymore without quality goaltending and goaltending DEPTH (Kings had Quick, but Bernier too, Boston had Thomas-Rask, Detroit had Hasek-Osgood etc.).

Also, if we get a bad backup coming our way and move Luongo, the backup will have to play around 25 games anyway. Now we would expect around a 0.7 win percentage from a goalie like Luongo, but from some average backup we could be looking at a 0.500 record which, over 25-30 games, is a drop from something like 20 wins to 15 wins. That's 10 points in the standings, which is HUGE and can easily be the difference between the Conference title, NW title and even making the playoffs.

I agree with Down Under that trading Luo is ridiculous.

Gillis is known to throw money at head injured players and fading superstars and yet Luo is the most dominant goalie in Canucks history and has saved both Gillis' and AV's butts and kept them in a job-all at a respectable cap hit.

Corey is not anywhere near the level of Luo with all of 33 regular season max. games played in one season.

Luo has shown he can be a brilliant goalie but yes,his best days are behind him.

However,if Luo can be convinced to stay and share the duties then I believe this team has the greater chance to win.

It is up to Gillis getting a brain wave and convincing Luo to stay,IMO,which is not going to happen, unfortunately.
