Grabner
White
Ellington
Smith

For all the people mad that we took Hodgson instead of Eberle.

In 2006 We took Grabner instead of GIROUX!

Sedin Sedin Burrows
Booth Giroux Kesler

All this is kinda dumb. Obviously no one knows who's going to flourish . So being mad about which player we took instead of another is pretty stupid.

Look at Lidstrom drafted 53rd. Or Pavel Datsyuk drafted 171st!!!
No one ever knows for sure who's going to blossom or not.

We had a lot of bad luck early on.
1970 drafted Dale Tallon second overall behind Gilbert Perrault. Dale had 336 points in 642 games, Perrault had 1326 pts in 1191 games.

1971 drafted Jocelyn Guevremont third overall behind Marcell Dion. Jocelyn had 307 points in 571 games, Dionne had 1771 in 1348 (5th all time in points)

1981 drafted Rick Lanz Seventh overall behind Paul Coffey, Larry Murphy, Dave Babych and Denis Savard.

These weren't necessarily bad picks, it was just the players picked before were stars and it was a crapshoot after. So close yet so far.

Now for the BAD picks

1989 - Dan Woodley 7th overall. 2 points in 5 games. Craig Janney was the next centre taken (751 points in 760 games).

1991 - Alex Stojanov, 7th overall. 7 points in 107 games. Only 3 other players in the first round had worse careers. At least we got Naslund for him!

1992 - Libor Polasek, 21st overall. It is not always expected for late first round picks to make the NHL. But Polasek wasn't even AHL calibre, putting up 2 goals in in his last 53 AHL games (to go along with a -11) before going to the Czech league. He did managed double digits once in the Czech league, scoring 10 goals in 48 games during the 97-98 season.

Other horrible picks:

1996 - Josh Holden
1997 - Brad Ference
2000 - Nathan Smith
2007 - Patrick White

Patrick White and Libor Polasek are battling for the worst player drafted first round by the Canucks and both were strange picks at the time. Valeri Bure and David Perron were the obvious choices at the time.

Bryan McSheffry (sp) in the 70's, JJ Daignault in the 80's along with Jason Herter. Patrick White however, did turn into Erhroff though.

The question you should be asking is what are some of our best draft picks because that list is shorter then the list of our dud picks.

PS, if you google some of the old drafts from the 80's n 90's, it's amazing to see how different and how much better the talent level is nowadays. I mean some of the guys that went in the 1st round back then might not even be 3rd round picks today

Leave him alone, that is despicable.

I would still take him over kopitar

I'm ok with drafting White because it got us 2 years of Erhoff.

Are you really signing off your own posts with "Jason Garrison"?...

Nedved instead of Jagr??

Nedved was NOT a bust. By your standard, anyone ahead of Zetterberg (7th round) or Datsyuk (6th round) was a bust - just doesn't work.

I wanna play the hindsight game!

Lol, Here's a fun list. from 1999 to 2008 I'm going to assemble a team of potential draft picks that were available when we took whomever it was we took in that draft, while keeping the actual good picks that were drafted.

I'm also assuming the picks available were only those available in the same round in which the actual player the Canucks took was taken.

Draft Year / Round / Who We Picked / Who We Should Have Picked / Who drafted them

1999 / 1 / Henrik Sedin / Henrik Sedin / Burke
1999 / 1 / Daniel Sedin / Daniel Sedin / Burke
2000 / 1 / Nathan Smith / Steve Ott / Burke
2001 / 5 / Kevin Bieksa / Kevin Bieksa / Burke
2002 / 2 / Kirill Koltsov / Duncan Keith / Burke
2003 / 1 / Ryan Kesler / Corey Perry / Burke
2003 / 9 Matthew Hansen / Brian Elliot / Burke
2004 / 4 Andrew Sarauer / Ryan Callahan / Nonis
2004 / 3 Alex Edler / Alex Edler / Nonis
2004 / 9 Jannik Hansen / Jannik Hansen / Nonis
2004 / 1 Cory Schneider / Corey Schneider / Nonis
2005 / 6 Kris Fredheim / Matt D'Agostini / Nonis
2005 / 7 Mario Bliznak / Anton Stralman / Nonis
2006 / 1 Michael Grabner / Claude Giroux / Nonis
2007 / 1 Patrick White / David Perron / Nonis
2008 / 1 Cody Hodgson / Tyler Myers / Gillis

Combined with current pieces, our roster "could have" looked like this next season (assuming no lockout)

FORWARDS

Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Corey Perry ($5.325m)
David Perron ($3.813m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Ryan Callahan ($4.275m)
Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m) / Steve Ott ($2.950m) / Matt D'Agostini ($1.650m)
Chris Higgins ($1.900m) / Maxim Lapierre ($1.000m) / Jannik Hansen ($1.350m)
Dale Weise ($0.615m) /

DEFENSEMEN

Alexander Edler ($3.250m) / Kevin Bieksa ($4.600m)
Anton Stralman ($1.700m) / Chris Tanev ($0.900m)
Andrew Alberts ($1.225m) /

GOALTENDERS
