Tortorella's Rant
Our D looks good on paper, they just need to play to their potential and not suck anymore.
L'Orange
Edler will only take the next step if he deals with his biggest issue.......consistency. Some games he is lights out awesome. Lethal on the powerplay, hitting like a freight train. Other nights (sadly during last years playoffs) he looks lost out there. He gave up his position, failed to take the man, wasn't playing a shutdown role. In my humble opinion, the Canucks defensive future for the year rests on Edler. He is the All-Star defenseman on the team. The standout. If Edler can bring 75-80% of his game every night, the Canucks will be frightening. If he can't, March is only seven months away.... nuck nit
We didn't lose the SCF because we had no defence. Well, technically yes, but Hamhuis was injured. We lost because our offense didn't come to play when we needed it most. 8 goals in 7 games won't win you anything. We are the most previledged team to have TWO Top 1 Defenceman. UFCanuck
Hamhuis is really underrated. He put up nearly 40 points and was the best defenseman on two President Trophy winning teams.
ilovekevinbieksa
I agree 100%! Edler is VERY underrated. He put up more points than doughty, keith, boyle, pronger, phaneuf, AND EVEN SUTER & LIDSTROM!
Burr's bandwagon
Agreed, we have a perfectly fine "D" and if anything, we need help on the 2nd line.

Darkstar
Why do most Canuck fans think that we need to acquire a top tier dman when we have TWO already? Alex Edler and Dan Hamhuis. We are actually better of than LA's D or CHI's D. In my opinion, Alex Edler is definitely comparable to Drew Doughty, Duncan Keith, Ryan Suter, and so on. Of course, there are those outstanding Defenceman like Weber, but look at Nashvilles offense, nothing. Edler and Hamhuis are both top of the line Defenceman IMO and they have every chance to win a cup with the Canucks. We didn't lose the SCF because we had no defence. Well, technically yes, but Hamhuis was injured. We lost because our offense didn't come to play when we needed it most. 8 goals in 7 games won't win you anything. Hamhuis and Edler both have a chance at a Norris trophy, not being a homer. I can't wait to see what a rested group of Canucks do this year, and maybe they will get more time to rest with a later start to the year. A healthy Edler along with Garrison is going to be absolutely lethal, same with Hamhuis and Bieksa. We are the most previledged team to have TWO Top 1 Defenceman. cmpunk
Our best defenseman on the team is Hamhuis, then Edler. Edler still can step it up another notch and play like he did in the 2011 playoffs. But man Hamhuis is our best. Put up nearly 40pts last year and was shutting down top players. Many of you don't look at +/- much, but Hamhuis had the 2nd best plus minus among defensemen at +29, only behind Chara!! And that is with playing against all the top players and lines in the NHL. That says a lot about how much he means to the Canucks and who our best defenseman is.

uber_pwnzor
What more has Doughty and Suter done than Edler? Doughty playing on a cup champ won't hurt, nor does Suter playing alongside Weber. Have a good look at Suter this year, he'll be no where compared to last year.

-AJ-
I never thought we needed a defenseman, what we need is a top 6 scorer/playmaker to put the puck in the net, because we simply did not do that enough last season!
cmccomb
Agree 100% that the Canucks defense is fine. I don't like Alberts as a 7th but other than that I don't believe we need any upgrades in this position. The second line needs a playmaker however and this has been obvious for quite some time now. This is why I don't understand why MG is chasing Doan, especially for the money Doan is asking for. Maybe a Doan signing makes Booth expendable and he is dealt for someone who can dish the puck to Kesler and Burrows on the second line? Maybe not? Just wish the season would start already!!! Canuck Surfer
Hamhuis and Edler are superb defenceman. Garrison, Bieksa and even Ballard are all well above average. Hamhuis is an outstanding defensive specialist on our back end; but does not stack up to guys like Chara, Pronger or Weber simply because he 212 lbs, not 230 or 250 and not 6'5" or 6 '8." He is also competent offensively, a very good passer but not as intimidating or as big a game changer as these monsters. Its not a big gap, but its still the difference between someone who is highly effective, and one who can single handily take over a game. Edler, while he hits a ton sometimes, is also 215 lbs and is also not big enough to move bodies in front of the net. He is better offensively than Hamhuis with a bigger shot and some creativity. But Edler is not an elite puck handler, nor does he possess breakout speed. Guys like Letang, Pietrangelo, Kieth, Karlsson and (yes) Doughty have another gear and these skills to both break pressure rushing the puck and command the offensive zone. In short, there are players with superstar / elite skills and size which, as much as we have stellar overall depth of talent, that can take over games. And of course only 2 or 3 teams in the last 20 years have won a Stanley cup without such a D man. Why do most Canuck fans think that we need to acquire a top tier dman when we have TWO already? Bodee
I fear we will go another season regretting not having a BIG dominating D who has the balls to shift Lucic and his ilk physically out of the way and then to face up to the consequences. We have great defenders.................some able to do the first thing in the regular season and none to do the second in a regular season. In the playoffs where it is a best of 7 I fear we can do neither to SC consistency......................We see it year after year and still we seem surprised. The very fact we tried for Weber proves that it is not only on the idiosyncratic CDC we think this is a requirement. We came so close in 2010-11 ..............but lack of such a player meant we were left mangled. I repeat we do NOT lack quality..............but that, as we have seen, doesn't get the job done in a string of best of 7s. I would also add that our goalie have suffered from a lack of this type of player in the past.
