Report: Vancouver acquires Lupul, VanRiemsdyk and Gardiner in 7 player trade with Toronto

The Canucks announced that they have traded forwards David Booth, Zack Kassian, Mason Raymond and goaltender Cory Schneider and a conditional 2013 draft pick in exchange for forwards Joffrey Lupul, James Van Riemsdyk and defencemen Jake Gardiner, along with Toronto's 2nd round draft choice in June.

"It was really hard trading Schneids and Kassian, well, all the players, but those two especially, but we feel we got better after the deal, for this up coming season, and the future. JVR has the potential to be a force on the ice, no where near the toughness as Kassian, but we believe James can step up to the next level in his development of offensive contribution and be a big part of this team, now, and down the road."

"We have full faith in Luongo moving forward, he's signed long term to a reasonable cap hit, is an elite goaltender in the game, couldn't be happier to have him stick around and put the trade rumors to rest. He's got a lot of good hockey left in him."

A big question mark moving forward is the plan with forward Joffrey Lupul. With Edler's contract up at the end of the season, and Vancouver picking up an added $4.4M a year for the next 4 years after the Ladd trade, with what's speculated to be a bare free agency year as GM's may be hesitant to just letting stars walk, GM's with big money this June could soon be looking forward to the Lupul sweepstakes if Vancouver can't make it work under the cap.

"Our plan is to just see how the season plays out with Lupul, that's all we're focused on right now is the season itself, not contract extensions(if included in the game). I'm sure we'll meet with Joffrey's agent at the re-sign phase after the draft and see what numbers their camp is looking for. We needed to take advantage of guys that are due for raises signed for below market value this year, like Edler for example, and make a strong push to get back to the finals this year, and have a better outcome than that of 2011."

A big piece in the trade was bluechip defender Jake Gardiner, the 18th overall pick of the Anaheim Ducks in 2008, who's fresh off a 30 point rookie season with the Leafs.

"We got a piece that's been missing for sometime now, and thats a top prospect on the blueline that has QB potential. Jake's rated an 81 at 22 years old, and we feel he will have the potential to turn into an elite defensemen in the league, and we'll give him every opportunity to do so. Not a replacement for Edler by any means, moving forward, we'd like to build off Edler and Gardiner on the back end"
