Absolutely loved what David Simon had to say on Realtime with Bill Maher considering the media and their underhanded hijacking of political rhetoric to gain viewers. The partisan media (both sides) offers judgements on singular events concerning the economy during the current presidency as opposed to actually reporting the facts surrounding how the state of the economy has been formed by decades of poor decisions. Political parties are truly undemocratic.

Iranian news agency picks up Onion article saying Americans prefer Ahmadinejad to Obama

An Iranian news agency has re-reported this satirical report from The Onion as fact. Picture:

A JOKE by the satirical newspaper The Onion appears to have gotten lost in translation in Iran.

An Iranian news agency has picked up as fact a story from the paper about a supposed survey showing a majority of white Americans would rather vote for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad than President Barack Obama.

The only trouble is it was made up, like everything in the just-for-laughs newspaper, which is headquartered in comedic capital Chicago.

The English-language service of Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency republished the story on Friday, several days after it appeared in The Onion.

Iran's Fars news agency ran this report, now deleted, using an article from The Onion without attribution and without, apparently, realising it was satire.

The Iranian version is copied word-for-word from the original.

"I like him better," said fictional West Virginia resident Dale Swiderski in the article, confirming he would much rather go to a baseball game or have a beer with Mr Ahmadinejad than spend time with Mr Obama.

"He takes national defence seriously, and he’d never let some gay protesters tell him how to run his country like Obama does."

Fars news agency also sent out a Tweet promoting the story. Picture: Twitter.com

Homosexual acts are punishable by death in Iran, and Mr Ahmadinejad famously said during a 2007 appearance at Columbia University that "in Iran we don't have homosexuals like in your country."

The Iranian text leaves out The Onion's description of Mr Ahmadinejad as "a man who has repeatedly denied the Holocaust and has had numerous political prisoners executed."

The Onion responded by poking fun at Fars as well as getting in a subtle dig over its copying a story without attribution: a journalistic no-no.

In a media statement, Onion editor Will Tracy said Fars has acted as the paper's Middle Eastern bureau since it was founded in the mid-1980s by Onion publisher T. Herman Zweibel.

"The Onion freely shares content with Fars and commends the journalists at Iran's Finest News Source on their superb reportage," Tracy said

However Fars failed to re-report a previous Onion article in which a green, glowing Ahmadinejad reveals to the UN that he has converted himself into a nuclear weapon.

The Fars article now appears to have been taken down, however news watchers have stored a copy online.

It's not the first time a foreign news outlet has been duped by The Onion. In 2002, the Beijing Evening News, one of the Chinese capital's biggest newspapers, picked up a story from The Onion that claimed members of Congress were threatening to leave Washington unless the building underwent a makeover that included more bathrooms and a retractable dome.
