SHARE YOUR BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCES!

My Slightly Unpleasant Customer Service Experience.

I walked into the Audio Video Unlimited on South Fraser Way in Abbotsford with my wife. I was dressed nicely. I drive a decent car and I shave regularly.

I was looking for a home theatre receiver. I like Sony products simply because they don't break down, at least in my experience, and most of the equipment I already own is Sony. A pushy salesman comes up and asks me what I am looking for. I've done loads of research online and only stopped by to check their selection and prices. I know the feature already.

I asked him where his lower end receivers are. (I'm not rich). He asks me the price range. I said up to $400. He points out the windows and said FutureShop is down the street. I smirked at him and started walking out the store. Then he grabs a brochure and says he's got one floor model Sony receiver for $229 but I had already made up my mind.

I ended up buying a $649 Denon receiver from Best Buy. Needless to say, I'll never step foot in that store again.

Well there is one positive to this story, you went with Denon over Sony. Denon is far superior to Sony, especially when it comes to AV recievers.

Yeah, my thread title is a bit much, I guess.

The best revenge was the fact that he never got commission from me.

Maybe he was joking ?

I considered this, hence the smirk. I'm a funny guy and I can see a joke when it's there. But he basically called me a cheap piece of crap. He said FutureShop. But he meant FutureYOUCHEAPPIECEOFcrapShop.

Even though that isn't a pleasant experience, you should feel glad that that was your worst. You must have an excellent track record with customer service if this is the worst :P

I work in customer service so I'm extra nice to people, especially over the phone. It's actually not my worst, I was just in rant mode. My worst took place in Canadian Tire many years ago. Should we turn this into a crappy customer service thread?

Your worst customer service experience will come from Best Buy if something goes wrong with the product.

I bought a phone from them 2 months ago. It started to act up, (turns out it was a network problem and nothing to do with the phone in the end, thankfully). I went in about 20 days after buying. I was told by the customer sales rep at BB that they only do exchanges on phones within 14 days, I would have to send the phone to the manufacturer, he would charge me for a new sim card if there was a problem with the sim card, and my only hope at getting a repair was to buy their warranty.

Confirmed with Telus that all phones are exchangedable under the DOA policy within 30 days, no matter where you buy them. Telus told me about the network problem, I tweaked a couple of settings and then the phone was fixed.

Not only did BB have zero idea about the network problem, despite the fact all dealerships had been notified, but they tried to avoid servicing my product and rip me off.

Sometimes a smaller place like Audio Video Unlimited can be the best option. BB has great prices, but awful everything else.

Doesnt beat The Brick trying to sell me a couch that he said was brand new and just had been taken out of the back yesterday. (Asked a question about the floor model)

So my dad lifted the cushions, found a crap ton of dirt, dust, wrappers, ect.
So my dad basically went ham on the guy and embarassed him. He did not say one word, just walked away.

He then avoided us the entire time there afterwards. We kept laughing the entire time we were there, myself extra loud so he heard. That was the first time I stepped foot in The Brick, and the LAST!

And Sukh you should of talked to the owner or manager, or you still can.

All I'm wondering is why you went to a store to buy your receiver.
I bought from newegg all my stereo equipment that was 70% cheaper than retail. Albeit, it was on sale, but still. The best buys and future shops of the world have INSANE mark up.

NO, it was the salesman's failure, the fact that he was willing to go outside of his price range is something a salesperson should count on. He could have said that he didn't carry low-end stuff, showed him the floor model, and then used that opportunity to up-sell the higher priced merch. The fact that he even mentioned the name of a competitor before showing the customer what he had to offer is a HUGE failure on his part.

Haha.. terrible salesman.

Whatever you do, you NEVER direct a person to another competitor, unless that person was looking for directions elsewhere and came to you to ask.

Future Shop doesn't mean "cheap". The prices there are extremely marked up (not cheap), quoting another person in this thread (Stefan).

I'm done buying electronics from stores in general unless i'm in a real hurry.

Everything comes from a boat from china direct to my house from now on. Ridiculously cheaper than any other option. Shipping, schmipping. Most of it's free.

It sounds more like stupid salesmen, if anything. Why the hell would you send a potential customer away to a competitor?

That's what I thought. The are supposed to make up for their (slightly) higher price with better service.

Denon > Sony. You made a good choice.

Yeah, I'm learning that pretty quick. The receiver is awesome.

And Sukh you should of talked to the owner or manager, or you still can.

Probably but it wouldn't accomplish much other than maybe the salesperson getting "talked to". That means nothing to me now.

All I'm wondering is why you went to a store to buy your receiver.
I bought from newegg all my stereo equipment that was 70% cheaper than retail. Albeit, it was on sale, but still. The best buys and future shops of the world have INSANE mark up.

Buying electronic online always scares me. I'm just old school in that sense I guess.

Sounds like a fail on your part.

When I said $400 it was because salespeople are trained to try to persuade you to spend over your budget. My budget was about $600. I was expecting him to show me $500 receivers. I ended up overspending by about $50 but I plan to get years of daily enjoyment out of this product. I'll just skip eating out the next time I get the urge.

I don't think that was terrible customer service. It was more of him trying to be cheaky and it was a joke gone wrong. I thought it was funny that he said that though. From my experiences at AVU down at Lougheed, it's been good everytime. Their salesman are not pushy and if you want help they will be there. You can also bargain for things like speakers and they are usually pretty good about it.

AVU doesn't sell a lot of low end receivers and speakers which is probably why he told you to go to FutureShop haha. Most of the stuff they sell at AVU are not carried at Best Buy and FutureShop.
