They clearly weren't refering to his time with the Canucks when they named Messier #1

Fully agree with the OP, Stevens and Lemieux should absolutely be on this list. Messier wasn't anything special, he just got the dirty stuff done while still wearing the C.

Then name someone more deserving.

Crosby at the age of 25 has accomplished more than most of the players on that list have when they were at that age.

I heard this guy is pretty good. Word on the street is he accomplished more than Sidney ever will by the time he grew pubic hairs.

Actually, Mark Messier wasn't captain until Gretzky left, so most of the Cups were under Gretz' tenure.

It's ok though, I consider Mess to be in the top 5 captains of all time.

I think Lidstrom is too high also.

Except Gretzky wasn't even on NHL.com's list (wrongfully so), and the poster you quoted was comparing Crosby to the players on NHL.com's list

OMG we could've had McKeown!

I think Virtanen was a terrible pick given that he's out for 6 months which will hinder his development. You don't pick someone at #6 under that circumstance, along with the fact that he was given a 3/5 IQ (aka he's dumb).

God dammit Benning. WHY VIRTANEN? Terrible move.

Down by the River - Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

Messier is so over-rated it's not funny. Lots of points? Absolutely! Talented. Yes. Was he a slouch? No way. But the media have painted him as this leadership genius. I didn't see that when he played.

Sorry my number one.

Jean Beliveau

10 Stanley Cup Wins. 1219 Points in 1125 Games, 1029 pims, 176 points in 162 playoff games.
Winner of the Smythe, Art Ross trophies, Two time Hart Trophy Winner, 14 All-Star Games.
6 Time First Team All-Star, 4 Times Second Team All-Star

On top of it, even players who played against him respected him.

That's leadership.
