The geniuses at Translink has done it again. A loophole allows fare evaders to escape getting a ticket if they refuse to provide ID.

The government will amend the law but may take a few days.

How is this Translink's fault? I thought the problem was in the legislation?

So... What happens now if you don't have ID on you?

Translink means you don't really need a driver's license.

Translink is a joke. They implement taxes, they raise fares etc etc. yet they don't put a system in place to catch the fare evaders. Then they wonder about operational losses.

When the line was built in 2010, they already were planning for fare cards. No reason to build infrastructure, then take it back out. That's more expensive than the losses incurred with farejumpers.

As well, on the CL, because it's a P3, there's more of an incentive from the private sector to make sure people pay - that's why you see train attendants (the green shirts) at entrances. They don't work for Translink, but for ProTrans.

Yeah... too bad that that Translink doesn't have the jurisdiction to adjust their own fairs AND to change Provincial laws. What a joke!

Yes, because putting a gate in place to prevent fare evaders on to skytrains needs to be consulted with the provincial government. I didn't know that. Do store owners also consult with federal and provincial government when they get a cash register in order to obtain money from customers? Do they also consult the provincial government when they put a security system in order to catch thieves?

Where was the money for creating the gates, maintaining it, and the labour costs associated with said gates?

It sure isn't with Translink, which is running in the red even as we type.

The worst thing about Translink is the false advertising. The train doesn't even ride through the sky, it has a set track that it just keeps going back and forth on. It's quite boring when compared to the million ways the thought of riding a real sky-train stimulates in me. Oh, and let's not even speak about the awful poetry or gestapo fare collectors. Not that I am pro fare evasion or anything, but when it's a taxpayer funded company I really have a hard time holding it against people.

Not surprised with the way Translink manages money. Am sure if they were a little wiser and more responsible with their budget, they would be able to put a gate and maintain it. They are spending more on transit cops so your labor costs associated with said gates is a moot point. In fact, it would probably be more cost effective to put gates in each station in the long run than paying those transit cops to issue fines for fare evaders.

Which, I'm guessing, is why they're doing it now, when there's more riders using the trains than before.
