Dont worry no one will give him 4 million; he's not that good. I think whats fair, is offer him the max 2 way contract possible for the # of years he wants. If someone beats that deal then you will be compensated as if he was an RFA.

Does that seem like a fair compromise to avoid another trade fiasco?

Don't know. Pre-launch, there was a bug where RFAs who were signed to offer sheets got stuck in limbo for the rest of their careers (No option to match or take compensation, offer sheet never expired) ...

I'm hoping EA fixed that

Because the old Ottawa GM had traded Phillips to Chicago a long time ago. You received his pieces of the trade but Ottawa never send Phillips to Chicago.
