SkeeterHansen
After both the NHL and NHLPA released statements (NHLPA in a bogus video format) today regarding the current lockout, the main point was clear: Both sides pretend to care about the fans, when the real light at the end of the lockout tunnel is dollar signs. Here is what the message from the NHL should say (changes in bold): Despite the expiration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the National Hockey League has been, and remains, uncommitted to negotiating around the clock to reach a new CBA that is fair to the Players and to the 30 NHL teams. Thanks to the conditions fostered by seven seasons under the previous CBA, competitive balance has created arguably the most meaningful regular season in pro sports, so we’ve decided to cancel it; a different team has won the Stanley Cup every year, and we are happy because none of the winners have been from Western Canada; fans and sponsors have agreed the game is at its best, and the League has generated remarkable growth and momentum. However, we believe, the billionaire’s who own the teams are not yet rich enough. While our last CBA negotiation resulted in a seismic change in the League's economic system, and produced corresponding on-ice benefits, our current negotiation is focused on a fairer and more sustainable division of revenues with the Players – despite the fact that we, the owners, clearly came out on top in the last deal. Those adjustments are attainable through sensible, focused negotiation -- not through rhetoric. Oh, the irony! This is a time of year for all attention to be focused on the ice, not on a meeting room. This should lead to answer the question as to why we do not meet as often as we should to get a deal done as quickly as possible. The League, the Clubs and the Players all have a stake in resolving our bargaining issues appropriately and getting the puck dropped whenever we damn well feel like it. We owe it to each other, and to the game. We don’t really care about the fans though, to be honest. Our mindless fans will come crawling back to us and make up our lost revenue like a meth addict in relapse. Sincerely, Adolf Bettman and the NHL

Drybone
yeah. The players are ENTITLED to 57% of a business they dont even own. How dare the owners actually want at least half of their own money. If the players dont like it? Players put the product on the ice? Fine. Go start up your own league and put it on the ice. You are fired. The league belongs to the OWNERS. The stanley cup belongs to the OWNERS . The rights were bought by the NHL a long long time ago. The league does not belong to the players. It does not belong to the fans. It does not belong to teenagers hiding behind the internet blogging from their parents basement. At some point, the owners also would like to make a profit, after they have to make up for the losses of other franchises. They cant do that with 43% of the revenue. The 57% the players get is pure profit. Guaranteed contracts. Must be nice. Their salaries have almost doubled in the last 7 years. Poor babies. Their contracts are GUARANTEED. Tell that to the Atlanta thrashers. Guess their profits werent guaranteed. Or the Coyotes, who cant make a profit to save their souls. If I was one of the owners, I would tell the union to either make a fair split of 50 50 and 5 year maximum contracts or you are FIRED. Go hire AHL players and others to go play in the NHL until the draft replenishes the stars.

EmployeeoftheMonth
I disagree. Hockey belongs to everyone. From the small kid who plays hockey in his backyard to the fan who spends hundreds of dollars every year for his team. The owners are just the guys who used their huge fortunes to buy a team and create an even bigger fortune. They are nothing but capitalists, and they couldn't capitalize if it wasn't for our love of the game, including those few players who've made it and got rich themselves. elvis15
Get used to it. From what I hear, fans (myself very much included) aren't too pleased about it. Just as we'd post about the regular season (if there was one), a majority of posts will become about the lockout.
