Well, after Diablo 3 was such a disappointment, I started playing Roller Coaster Tycoon again and I must have put hundreds of hours into it this Summer.

Which old games do you still get a ton of enjoyment out of?

For me:

Roller Coaster Tycoon (1999)

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (1999)

GTA3 and Vice city, Wing Commander anything, those old sierra games, Ultima 7, Parasite Eve 2, Chronotrigger, Phantasy star 4, Lunar silver star complete/Eternal Blue complete, Ocaraina of Time.

Obviously not all at once there, but I'll get the urge to blow the dust off of any of those games once in a while.

Oh and this game I'll chuck on just for the intro theme, hah.

PS1:
Tomba! & Tomba! 2
Rally Cross 2

PC:
Sim City 3000
Rollercoaster Tycoon 1,2 (Also 3... but it's only 8 years old)
I also play WarCraft 3 a lot still... still can't believe it's 10 years old already. I played some Warcraft 2 recently, and I kind of like it better lol

I'm starting to save up to buy a NES and some games, since I missed out on that generation of gaming.

As a Child Of The 80's, I absolutely love compilation discs from my favorite arcade game companies.

I have 2 pinball emulators from Williams and Gottleib which are the bomb. I have Atari, Williams and Konami "Greatest Hits" packages of late 70's, 80's and early 90's arcade classics.

I wish arcades were still around today, but, with the emergence of the home consoles, they just disappeared. If they were still around, I would still go to arcades, even at 45 years old. Video games used to be everywhere... Supermarkets, corner stores, laundromats, arcades, BC Ferries, bowling alleys, bars.

Bring back the arcade! Sh!iloads of fun for only a few quarters!

I remember seeing Galaga at the local drugstore when I was about four. Didn't know what it was at the time but I loved watching it. Then there was the 90's when Street Fighter II machines were everywhere. I miss that!

These are all games I'll never get tired of playing:
Sonic the Hedgehog
Super Mario World
Street Fighter II
NiGHTS into Dreams
Bubble Bobble
Ristar
Dynamite Headdy
Donkey Kong Country
Baku Baku

And probably more...

Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger for the SNES are two of my all time favourite games.

I'm starting to save up to buy a NES and some games, since I missed out on that generation of gaming.

I'm not telling you to search "zsnes emulator download" in google then click the link then download it, an I'm also not telling you to download a few ROM's for it either, so don't do it!

;)

Was playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Super Mario Bros 2, and Star Fox 64. Managed to fail miserably at all of them for some reason, lol. Couldn't make it past Mystic Cave in Sonic, and barely made it to World 3 in Mario. I managed to finish Star Fox, but I missed most of the triggers and ended up travelling largely down the right side of the map.

I dunno about you guys, but when you played those classic games did any of you feel a sense of uniqueness?

What I mean is, games now for example Modern warfare I just play campaign once and say whatever and toss the game aside.

Back then, even though the games are far below today's standard I would just constantly play it to finish everything possible, to explore anything possible... Don't know it just had a different feeling to it.

yep. i remember playing Disney's Aladdin on SNES about 300 times. Super Return of the Jedi, too. In terms of Mario games, it would be an embarrassment to not have all the stars, all the secrets mastered, etc. Games like Chrono Trigger I'd have maxed out everything, with all the rare/good weapons. FF7, too (Ruby Weapon, anyone?)

things have definitely changed. although to be fair, Skyrim, Fallout, and games like that do offer a lot of options in terms of gameplay.

I know exactly what you mean...

Well there are a few games today that are still like that, modern warfare is a shallow game with no substance anyway, like GLASSJAW said games like Skyrim and the Fallout series are good for replay value.

I feel there are still plenty of unique games released nowadays, as well those that offer hundreds of hours of gameplay, along with those that offer replay-ability... although perhaps few to none that offer it all in the same package.
You can play a game like Skyrim for an eternity. A game like Fallout to approach the story (stories) through various different lenses. A game like Deus Ex: Human Revolution for multiple approaches to it's gameplay. So on and so forth (it starts to get subjective).
There's a lot of games still coming out that I feel are as good as or better than games I played as a kid.

Although there does also appear to be a rise in the amount of generic throwaway crap, in the form of your Modern Warfare's Mass Effect 3, and other such useless games. It's not exactly as if there's no crap in retro gaming, because there's a hell of a lot of it. But with those games it was more of a lack of money and talent to work with. Nowadays companies with all the resources they could possibly need, are instead ensuring that supposed AAA games are completely dumbed down in order to give them a mass appeal, rather than focus on quality. I call that a worrying trend.

Mass Effect 2 was good, and I plan on playing that one again soon, but the third was a piss poor attempt at a video game...

Exactly. I have to use it as my go to example. Not only does it personify what it means to dumb down a game, it also tries it's hardest to simply coast on the name of past success. I think if the first 2 games do a lot to show what modern gaming does right, then Mass Effect 3 shows what exactly is wrong with it. It's too bad that along with being a piss poor attempt at a video game on it's own, it completely ruins the appeal of the first 2 in most every way as well. Still pissed about that, lol.

It's easy to just ignore and avoid crap when you know what you're dealing with, but it sucks when it creeps into games you were otherwise looking forward to enjoying.
