This thread made me want to puke.

The mere thought of Cherry as the commissioner made me sick.

RIP LB RR PD

I don't think either has the brains for the job, personally, Bob Nicholson or Ken Dryden would be my choice.

And visors would be illegal.
I'm saying Aladeen a lot because http://forum.canucks...dpost__10922428

I bet when Schneider turns 38, he will have broken all of Luongo's records.

Dryden was the guy I thought of first, but Nicholson is a good call as well.

Although I'm one of the few around here who likes Grapes, I don't see him as Commish material.
Orland Kurtenbach and Dennis Kearns had just been torched 8-1 by the Habs, but they still took time to come out to meet us, some fellow BC boys who were playing hockey in Montreal. THAT"S what being a Canuck is!

Okay, if you don't like either choice, well then argue constructively, just none of this sarcastic, non-constructive comparing Gretzky to Keenan, etc. Some of you have made good cases, like Ken Dryden or Bobby Orr for Commissioner. Others have talked about why Gretzky or Cherry would not be the right fit, and gave reasonable reasons why. I may not agree with them, but we need constructive talk and none of this stupidity, like Auger or Keenan for Commissioner - you guys are not serious about those. Get focused guys, and find working ideas. Rome is burning for goodness sake, so we gotta remove the cinder in Gary Bettman.

Grapes may be tough enough to keep Snider in line, but he isn't the right personality, even more polarizing that Bettman, Gretzky IMO just does not have the education. Nicholson is experienced at running a large scale hockey operation (Hockey Canada) and keeping various factions on the same page. Dryden is a lawyer, has the business knowledge, and can see both sides of the argument, and unlike Bettman, has the respect of all (players, owners, and fans).

Yeah, okay we could add Nicholson and Dryden to the mix. And okay, I guess with Gretzky's lack of formal education, he may not be so ideal. I'll argue though formal education or lack thereof need not be a factor. It is expected, but not outright required. Business is business nonetheless.

But whomever you suggest, the bottom line is that Bettman has to be removed.

Lol I'd love to see the rule changes cherry would bring in

Wooden sticks mandatory, if your stick breaks u get a penalty.

Helmets no longer mandatory

You get suspended for starting s**t and not finishing it.

All European suspensions twice as long as any north American committing the same crime

lol...thanks for the comic relief...I needed that. As for the topic at hand, I've got nothing...other then No to both but Gretzky should definitely be a consultant/advisor.

I wouldn't mind seeing him in charge of discipline. No way would Keith have gotten off with a 5-game wrist slap on DB's watch...

Cherry would ban Europeans, have 2 lines devoted to 4th line grinders, and have the players self-police with goonery. It'd be a league of head hunters....basically 30 teams full of Brad Marchands

Nah, grapes doesn't like cheap shot artists, he likes guys like Probert, Wendel Clark, Rick Tocchet and Cam Neely. Guys that will drop the gloves and break your nose not ones who hit from behind and dive at your knees.

Cherry only likes cheap shot artists when they play for him .. until Cherry's IQ exceeds his neck size (17), he is the worst choice imaginable ..

All we need is a guy who is around Bettman's age, has played for 15+ years in the NHL, has been actively involved in the league since his retirement, and was a key part in winning the Stanley Cup for his team.

In his time, he shouldn't have been afraid to drop the gloves and sacrifice for his team.

hmm don't know. To be honest both would be much better than Bettman as they actually enjoy the game. Bettman really isn't made for his job. We've all known that since he started. The fact that the lock-out doesn't bother him is evidence of his lack of passion or love for the game. I say if there is a lock-out all people involved which includes the commissioner shouldn't be payed. I mean if I don't show up to work I don't get paid. Maybe taking their pay away until lock-out is resolved, will help them continue discussions instead of having steady talks for 2 months before the expiration date and then stopping when they need to be talking more than ever!

I was laughing when I saw everyone's opinions that Cherry would ban Europeans and discard all the safety equipment. Well, I think that is a little extreme - if he had his way, he probably would ban everyone, except for perhaps Zdeno Chara.

Actually two names nobody mentioned were Brian Burke and Pat Quinn, both respected, educated personalities with real experience in the game and are a little more reasonable than Grapes.

Linden, I think everyone would like, but he doesn't have that much business experience to be running the whole league.

Yes, it's the owners who make the call though, but really, they aren't winning anything as long as Bettman is in charge. Yes, league revenues have risen - but most of those gains still come from Canada. The American market is still crawling. Bettman, while he's achieved a mandate, it has only hurt the owners themselves, especially Acquillini, Molson, Edwards, Tanenbaum, or Katz, owners whose fans really care about the game and who would move forward, but are entangled in this politics.

Bettman is not a failure as the OP posted.

If he thinks he is such a failure, why have the owners stood by him and keep renewing his contract? He is obviously doing a great job for them.

There were no lockouts under Eagleson and Canadian teams still won Stanley Cups.
