It's simple, teams won't want to move players that are in white, want to move players in red, and want to acquire players in green.

It's a pretty straight forward, albeit imperfect, system ...

NHL 12's trading engine was a joke. "I'll give you Gionta and a 1st for Ovechkin." Washington GM: "Done!"

hamhuis for gardiner straight up worth it in the long run as long as you play gardiner on the top pairing and do it early or else it will cost draft picks

Personally I would say that's overpayment depending on what you're trying to achieve with your team in the season and depends on how many years your league is.

Would have kept Duchene and both picks personally. Definitely feels like you could have got more.

The key difference is that Sopel can fill in for Seabrook and Campbell just fine. Bieksa, he is garbage so in that sense he is like the worst defenseman in the league.

When Cody (Hodgson) gets older, he might be better than Datsyuk.

Let's not push this guy (Kassian). He's still immature, and if he fails on the 2nd line it's because he isn't ready. Some guys really need years to develop, it's how well and how fast players adapt to the game. In my opinion, I'd rather have Horvat getting 2nd line minutes. He will start off on the 3rd line next season but I see him making the transition, being a great compliment to whoever plays his wings.

At this point, I don't see Kassian fitting in to any role other than a 3rd. If players like Kassian start getting 2nd line minutes then we just stay inconsistent as a team.

The idiocy on CDC....

I was really dry on top six forwards (I had Steve Downie as my 2nd line RW) and needed a top pair D man to complement Erik Johnson (Shane O'Brien just didn't cut it. So now my lines would look like this

Landeskog - Stastny - Brown
Hejduk - O'Rielly - Booth
McGinn - Jones - Downie
Mcleod - Mitchell - Mcleod

Edler - Johnson
Goligoski - Elliot
O'Brien - O'Byrne

My Luongo trade with Florida -- I wanted a 1st, a slam-dunk, sure-thing forward prospect (4 or 4.5 star potential... couldn't find Bjugstad in the game, so aimed for Huberdeau), and a backup goalie. Only tried trading with Florida because I thought it'd be more true to life that way.

I tried many different combinations and took quite a while to find the right trade. For whatever reason Florida wasn't really interested in Luongo, so I had to make it worth their while. I had a couple trades go through that I didn't like, so went back and reloaded a previous save and went at 'er again.

Was happy with this:

To Florida:
Luongo
Rodin
Honzik (some goalie I'll never use, not enough potential anyways)
2nd round pick, 2013
2nd round pick, 2014

To Vancouver:
Huberdeau
Theodore
1st Round Pick, 2013

Tried the same deal with only one 2nd rnd pick or with both picks and taking away Honzik and they said no. I feel like I overpaid, but Florida wouldn't take less. Rodin is fine to deal as Jensen and Gaunce should be better players in the long run. Huberdeau has 4.5-star potential and should be a monster in a couple years if I play him. Thoughts?

Looking to eventually trade Raymond, perhaps Ballard, and other prospects (Schroeder and Connaughton maybe) to add a bigger 3rd line forward (more PF or TWF) and maybe more 1sts or better prospects. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions or trades they've already completed that work well? Looking to win the cup in the first season and then concentrate on a minor rebuild in following seasons to establish a more major dynasty type team.

The only one of those trades that was logical to some degree for NYR was the Burrows+Kesler trade. Why the heck would they even think about taking Luongo or Hamhuis?

Well, I'm sure he's figured it out by now since it's been out for 2 months.

Assuming he hasn't, the basics of the GM Brain trading logic are:

Team expectations - Teams designate themselves as one of 4 types of teams:Champion (One of the top teams in the league), Contender (Likely to make the playoffs, but not as strong), Hopeful (Bubble team), and Rebuilder (A team not expected to make the playoffs). This is based on their team makeup now and for the next 3 seasons. Teams like the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks will be classified as Champion teams, as they're very strong and have an excellent chance of capturing the cup. The 3 seasons thing is key as the brain may project that a Rebuilder will become a Contender or Champion in the next 3 seasons, so it may be difficult to strike a deal with those teams at all. I'm not a big trading guy (I'm a develop-from-within guy), so I haven't really tested this aspect too much. Edmonton would likely be or become a Rebuilder w/ Champion aspirations, I would imagine.

Champion and Contender teams are unlikely to trade away core assets, but are generally willing to give up picks/prospects for players that will help them now.

Hopeful and Rebuilder teams are unlikely to trade away picks/prospects, but are generally willing to give up veterans for picks/prospects.

Roster Management - The GM Brain takes into account things such as age, # of players of the same position on the team, skill level, player role, and cap hit. So if a team has a substantial number of right wingers, but are lacking left wingers, swapping one of your LWs for one of their RWs of similar trade value is more likely than if you offer them a player at a position that they're already strong in.

Once the brain takes this into account, it then compiles its trade block.

So, for example, if a team is a Hopeful with a 2nd line center currently filling the 3rd line center spot on the team but has a 3rd line scoring winger player right wing, the brain will put the 2nd line center on the block and a 2nd line right winger as one of the team needs.

It's actually a pretty well-designed logic system, at least on paper. As we all know, it has some flaws in the logic (KOPITARZ ON WAIV0RZ!!!), but it's substantially better logic than NHL 12 and past games.

That is the truth. The dude becomes a beast as long as he gets top 4 minutes.

Trying to keep some level of truth to the game in terms of trades.

I moved Luongo/Ballard/Booth(cap hit kills me)/2nd to FLA for Weiss(put on LW to feed Kes and Higgins)/Theodore/Huberdeau.

Huberdeau has 4.5-star potential and should be a monster in a couple years if I play him. Thoughts?

In my BAP I spent one year in the WHL and playing the the NHL in my second year and I'm in the NHL rookie scoring race with Huberdeau and he's 85 overall.

I don't know what his overall is to start with but after one year of simulation he's 85 overall. If he's anything under 75 overall that's pretty good in my books.

On a side note RNH is 88 overall in the same amount of time. Also not sure what his overall is to start with, 80 I'm guessing?

Any ideas on trades that work if ur nucks"

I just started a GM game and I traded Tampa Bay Ballard and Booth for St. Louis and a 3rd. Then I traded Nashville Archibald for Gill and a 3rd.

I don't know why everyone trades Luongo away in the game, it's a game (in other words no meltdowns) and he's rated 89 overall, Schneider kinda sucks for the first year anyway.

I also traded Raymond for Dwight King

Due to a ridiculous amount if injurys I was looking through the trading block and saw Anaheim looking to ship out Selanne so I offered Rodin and a draft pick (can't remember which) plus I got a draft pick back (also can remember which).

I also acquired Galchenyuk, I can't remember exactly for what, it was last night and I was just messing around at the trade deadline and Montreal was totally willing to give him away and his value wasn't very high.

Oh yeah! I traded Hamhuis and I got Galchenyuk and a boat load of draft picks.

So here's my lines going into the playoffs:

Sedin - Sedin - Selanne
Higgins - Kesler - St. Louis
Arnott (injured Burrows fill in) - Lapierre - Hanson
King - Malhotra - Weise

Edler - Barker (I heard he gets good... I hope so)
Garrison - Bieksa
Alberts (injured Gill fill in) - Tanev
