The owner of a Karaoke bar in Calgary has apologized for a handwritten sign that said they did not serve Japanese People. It was all over the dispute between Japan and China over some small islands in the Pacific.

The sign was in written in Chinese. The owner said it was a joke.

The funny thing is that the message was wriiten in Chinese so Japanese people would have no idea what the sign said.

So how could Japanese people be offended by a sign they can't read. Its like me going to a Japanese restaurant and there as sign that is derogatory to me (except I would have no what idea it said).

Only they could read it, and did read it, and took a picture of it...

I bet when Schneider turns 38, he will have broken all of Luongo's records.

Misleading title - as far as I know they didn't actually refuse any Japanese service.

To me, it's just one of those "free beer tomorrow" signs in poorer taste.

Have you read the linked article? I just quoted what it said. The author said Japanese were refused service. That was his take on it.
The actual sign said Japanese were not welcomed there. Its true no Japanese were refused service but that is how the media is running with the story.

The big deal should be about how unfunny the bar owner is.
What a stupid joke...

Japanese use a hybrid writing system--Chinese characters for meaning plus their own unique symbols for pronunciation. No literate Far Eastener would have failed to get the gist, if not the complete meaning.

However, I will never understand people’s need to make an issue of such things and try and force their way somewhere they are not wanted. I personally know what it feels like, and still say the thing to do is take your money elsewhere.

The effect of the Canadian Charter of 'Rights and Freedoms,' and similar legislation infesting the West, has been to take away freedom of association at every instance it crosses some freshly laid PC dung.
