Once again, the Mayan long count (which was taken from the Mesoamerican long count), lasts approximately 5,125 years. It ends this year on 12/21/12, and restarts on 12/22/12, moving into the next b'ak'tun. The cycle you are talking about ends on October 15th 4772, which is prophesied to be a date of celebration, moving into the next piktun (which is 20 b'ak'tun - I think that was what you got confused with). If you don't believe me, I suggest you look it up before you talk ignorantly again.

You know what? We were both a little wrong on this. The calendar resets either at 13 baktuns or at 20, and there is disagreement on which it is, and it can't be both. I was reading sources that said it was 20, which is the 4772 data.

from wikipedia:

December 21, 2012 is simply the day that the calendar will go to the next b'ak'tun, at Long Count 13.0.0.0.0. The date on which the calendar will go to the next piktun (a complete series of 20 b'ak'tuns), at Long Count 1.0.0.0.0.0, will be on October 13, 4772.

If it goes to 13 and 15 and such, it doesn't reset to 1 and the long count doesn't end til 4772. And this makes 2012 just an end to a 400 year cycle. If 2012 is the end of the long cycle then 4772 is really just baktun 6 of the next cycle. No one agrees on which it is yet (ie it isn't know with certainty). But it can't be both.

Another widely held belief about the Long Count is that the bak'tun in fact does not reset at 13, but is rather another cycle of 20 like all the other place values, with the exception of the months, or winals.

On another note, here is an article on the modern maya:

I am wondering what other parts of their religion you are open to:
- faith healing by sacrificing a chicken
- Chak the water god
- Ik'al (a cave dwelling entity)
- caves are portals to the realm of deities, demons and ancestors
- burning incense in a cave to appease the gods
- only shamans can journey into caves and return alive
- the souls of shamans accumulate in their places of worship when they die

Or how about all the mayan gods liste dont hsi page. Are you open to all of them existing?

At the end of the day, that's their way of life. We may look at it as strange and/or uncivilized, but that's normal to them, and they choose to live that way. I'm open to their beliefs because I find it interesting, but I wouldn't believe in it.

In summation, pole reversals aren't that big of a deal, and the world is not going to end at the end of this calender year, or the Mayan calender.
