Cody Hodgson stripped of Captaincy: New Captain named

Okay he wasn't stripped of it because he NEVER was officially named the Captain. He's not even named as an alternate.

I guess they came to the conclusion after talking with the players that he isn't fit to be a captain.

Veteran center named captain of Amerks

Kevin Porter has been in the Buffalo Sabres organization just three months but the Rochester Americans already know what he’s all about as a hockey player.

Porter was named captain of the Rochester Americans by coach Ron Rolston on Tuesday. He announced the decision to the team following practice at Blue Cross Arena at the Rochester Community War Memorial.

“He works hard and there’s a lot of experience from other organizations that he brings us,” said Rolston, whose team opens the American Hockey League season on Friday at home against the Syracuse Crunch.

This was no dictatorial decision, however. Rolston said it came after consultation with his staff as well as the players.

There were two primary reasons Porter was selected: “His experience and the fact he has already come in and got a lot of respect from his teammates,” Rolston said.

Porter was captain at the University of Michigan in his senior year of 2007-08. He wore the “A” as an alternate captain for the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage in 2009-10.

“Obviously it’s a huge honor,” said Porter, who signed a one-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres organization in July. “To be captain of any team is a great honor and especially this team.”

The alternates will be fourth-year defenseman T.J. Brennan and eighth-year right winger Mark Mancari.

Porter, a 26-year-old native of Detroit, is starting his fifth season in pro hockey and has played 163 NHL games for the Phoenix Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche. He spent the past two seasons with the Avalanche, scoring 18-14-32 in 109 games.

Hodgson was only a captain for pre-season wasn't he? He'll likely be with Sabres once the season gets going so it makes more sense to name a player that will be there all season.

As much as people wanna laugh at this, it's kind of a deceiving title.
